Idaho Oil
« on: March 17, 2014, 08:37:48 PM »
I have been looking at putting in for years and I am getting close to having the cash. Who all puts in from out of state?

my dad drew moose the second time he put in... he will probably never draw in this state.

Just remember if you put in for Idaho's OIL you can't put in for any deer or elk permits.

One of the reasons I think they have the best permit system out there.

you could still apply for elk. Only the species you drew last year you cannot apply for. If I dont draw moose ill enter some second draws for deer and elk.

My hunting partner and myself are putting in for moose.  What units are all of you guys putting in for? Hopefully we aren't all going in for the same units. I am either going to put in for unit 4, 4a, 10, 62 or 64 but I have to check all of those numbers again and make sure I'm not mixing up numbers.  I think my partner is putting in for unit 1. Good luck to all of you guys!

Do you need to buy the ID license to put in for the oil tags?

yep and you also have to front the cost of the tag... not a cheap application.

Never applied for Idaho.  Maybe a dumb question, but is the license fee refunded if you don't draw an OIL tag you applied for?

nope. You own the license regardless if you draw any tag or not. Only the tag fee for oils is refunded if not drawn.

cem3434,
Unit 4 has some dandy moose in it but is a very tough draw with the amount of people that put in. I do most of my bear hunting in that unit and I see at least one trophy bull every year. Don't over look unit 3 though. The biggest moose I have ever seen in person was in 3 down by the little north fork. Units 7 and 9 are kinda risky to me for the amount of money you spend on a tag. There are still moose in there but not like it was. Remember Idaho only gives out 10% of their tags to nonresidents so the more tags in a unit the better. Good luck in your draw.

I thought that the total 10% number was based upon the entire number of moose tags, and not 10% of the unit quota?  Am I mistaken here?

it is a maximum of 10% of the quote for each hunt. Unless they less than 10 tags then nr is limited to 1 tag.it is not the total of all moose tags.

Roger that.  But it's not a guaranteed 10% of the quota, just that NR can draw UP TO 10% (or 1 in the cases you mentioned)?
