Just moved to Bozeman

Hello all,
after a few year stint in south Dakota I am back to some real trees and mountains.  I landed a great job in Bozeman!!  i have been here since November and have spent some time looking around.  I know that many of you have hunted in Mt and i am looking for general advise.  Things i should have in my pack that I may not have needed in western Washington or SD.  Resources in the area I may wish to look into, that sort of thing.  Thanks for the help

You'll want to add some bear spray.

There is lots to do around Bozeman.  Your question is pretty vague, can you narrow it down for me?

The bear spray sounds like sound advise, probably something i would have over looked in my hunting pack.  I picked up a new fly rod on Sunday so learning to fly fish is on my list (I have done a little, but am looking forward to a lot more).  I like to hunt, fish, hike and camp. I am married with 3 kids (11,8, and 6) and everyone likes to come with for most adventures so I try to make most of my trips kid friendly and include them as much as possible.  Any ideas from people that have been here before would be greatly appreciated.  I have a few co-workers that have offered to take me into their deer/elk camps so I am feeling pretty good about the move but it is still a very unfamiliar area, so i am really starting over for hunting/fishing and such.  I know that I am being a bit vague but to be honest I am not really sure what I am looking for.  Just general advice on the area.

I had a great time fishing south of you. Hit the Gallatin south of the canyon and then the Madison back up heading out of west Yellowstone towards Ennis.

Seriously, anywhere you go south of Bozeman, I would carry spray.  North it's not as big a deal, but south it is including the Gravellies.

There is really good fishing lower on the Gallatin too, out of Four Corners.  Go early in the year (like right now) and fish the river inside of Turner's Flying D Ranch.  You can access it legally from one of the fishing accesses and walk below the high water mark.  You can do really well right now throwing hardware for some nice browns.

Good fishing like Jack said up the canyon.  Lots of company, but the scenery is great.  Do yourself a favor and fish Hyalite Lake in the fall at the inlet channel.  Again, hardware is very effective but you could likely do very well with Crystal Buggers or something else similar.

Good camping areas around Hyalite, but half the town of Bozeman goes up there on weekends. 

If you like to run, you can do the Bridger Ridge if you get a lottery entry.  Or, do the Devil's Backbone.

Lots of good hikes in any direction from there.  The Tobacco Roots are really neat and have some high lakes.  Spanish Peaks as well.

I still hunt in that area, so I'll let you figure that one out on your own.  PM me if you have some specific questions on areas.

You will die before you run out of things to do around there.  Fire away with any other questions.

Pretty jealous of ya! I was able to work/live in Bozeman recently and absolutely love the place. I received quite a bit of solid info from JLS and Longrange7mm, both very knowledgeable of the area as far as hunting goes. I did some kicking around the bridger's , awesome area with even better views, messed around above hylite , there is a set of falls up there (can't remember the name) but should be ice falls right now which is an awesome sight. I suggest eating the Bison Burger at Burger Bobs downtown, also check out the gun cabinet at Schnees downtown!

You're probably thinking of Grotto Falls.  The hike from the Hyalite trailhead to Hyalite Peak is a neat one.  Lots of neat waterfalls, and the view from Hyalite Peak (10k ft plus) is amazing.

It's also a neat hike to go from the Fairy Lake trail in the Bridgers and hit the summit of Sacajawea Peak.

Great pics. We went through yellow soon last month. A lot of it is closed but we were able to do a little hiking and saw a lot of animals.
