Older 2 stroke equip. (Chain saw)
« on: March 22, 2014, 09:12:04 AM »
Just had service done on my chain saw which in approx 29 years old. The fuel mixture according to instructions is 16 to 1. Most of the newer 2 stroke stuff today is 40 or 50 to 1. They tested and tuned my saw with a mix of 40 to 1 saying that the oils of today are far superior  than 29 years ago and a 40 to 1 mix is ok for older 2 stroke equipment. What do all you people think? Will it be ok? It won't be getting a lot of use anymore. My firewood cutting days are over. Just be using it for storm clean up and elk camp.

I would probably keep the oil mix rich just to keep it from over-revving, it was designed to run at 16:1, I would keep it there. I'm sure premium 2 stroke oil is better but that is also a 29 year old 2 stroke engine.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

It would be better to keep the mixture screws adjusted to the rich side, and then use 40:1 mix you should be just fine.  Chainsaw will only over-rev if the idle screws are set too lean, and that condition will destroy the engine rapidly.

Run it at 40-1.

And try to get ethanol free fuel or drain and run  the saw dry after every use.

The saw shop is right.

40:1 is fine for the smaller engines with the better synthetic lubricants out now.   32:1 for the larger engines like motorcycles etc...

All of my saws are older, most mixes are designed to mix with one gallon of fuel,i stop the pumt at about 9:10-i also add a couple of squirts of stabil to every gallon, ido same for mower and i never have a problem, over time all chainsaws have to be adjusted-even elevation can effect them.
