Black Bears eat elk calves
« on: March 25, 2014, 09:27:20 PM »
The last two years "Stuck in the rut" has videos of  Black bears killing elk calves.  We need to all get serious about filling our bear tags.  You can now get a nonresident bear tag for Idaho good in several units around CDA for $30.  Great opportunity for Spokane area hunters to go get a spring bear.

Use to be the number 1 mortality for elk calves I dunno if wolves have surpassed it, but they do some damage on fawns and calves. I have never understood these hardcore deer and elk hunters who do not hunt bears, but b&^$% about elk or deer numbers! get out there and do your part!

I've had very good bear baits in Idaho go vacant once the elk calves start being born.  The bears start travelling all over sniffing the thermals looking for the next meal.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

I've watched it unfold a couple times for both deer and elk.   Pretty amazing.   They dont just nail the newborns either.  They go with it well until the fall, just not as successful, but the meals are bigger.

I've seen a lot of little hooves in bear scat in Canada. So I'm not surprised.

In an area with a spring bear season south facing slopes where elk cows love to calve are a great place to look for bears.

During the end of May beginning of June my we rig our dogs through the elk calving areas to get races going. That's where the big bears will be hanging out.
