New Archer... Couple of questions.
« on: June 02, 2014, 05:22:42 PM »
Hey all,

Got a new bow and have been practicing every night for a few weeks now.  I will be buying the multi-season permit this year so will give deer a try with the bow if it's close.  Not gonna be upset if I don't get a shot with the bow as I am ready with the muzzleloader and rifles.

My question is on the most common techniques for you archery guys.  I still hunt the wet side and spot and stalk/still hunt for Mulies.

Will this work for Blacktail or should I plan on getting a stand or ??

Thanks for your advice.

Stands work, just depends on how much patience you have. Spot and stalk works really well also.  So basically it just depends on your style of hunting and just keep at it

practice all shots i shoot atleast 2 hours a night on a knee shoot from standing and shoot from sitting down. u never know if u are gonna be sitting next to a tree and a buck walks 20 yards away. also i like to practice more around the 40-60 yard range it seems like alot more theasable range. also try and get to were u can atleast get really close with ranging just by looking its very hard but there will be times were you aint got time to range at all but got enough time to shoot. u shoot enough u will eventually get pretty good at geussing the ranges and knowing what pin to use
work hard but hunt harder

Just curious, are you planning to carry both a bow and a long gun while you spot and stalk?

Very few seasons overlap so you're more than likely not going be able to carry a rifle/muzzleloader and bow at the same time, FYI.

He may have a multi season tag witch means he could hunt with his bow during muzzleloader and rifle season.

Yeah it sounded like he wanted to try to take a deer with a bow if it was in close. You're allowed to hunt with a bow during modern firearm, I thought that was what he was getting at when I read it.

No...  No mixed hunts at all.  I was going to hunt west side for archery.  If nothing comes up then go to the muzzleloader and then finally rifle and back to muzzleloader.

Mostly just trying to figure out how you guys get within 20 yards of a bt buck.  I am not sure if a stand is for me but if that is what it takes.

If you want to play the best odds, you can use your bow during early rifle season in areas that don't allow gunpowder. For example, some locations near housing are great spots with lots of blacktails but too close to use firearms. There I'd set up a tree stand and rattle in a buck. Works great, I have done exactly that. But you'll have to do some legwork to find private or public land that closely adjoins private land. Tree farms are good too if you stick to the fringe between clear cut and timber line.

Check the regs for firearms restriction zones.
