What Caps are you shooting?
« on: November 21, 2008, 10:44:19 PM »
Is one really better or used more than the other?

No reason for me to change, I have ~350 rounds through this gun so far with zero misfires.  Lyman GPR, hot water cleanup, bore butter, patched round balls, and Goex black powder, nothing fancy.

I use the #11s made by Dynamit Nobel.
Extremely hot and excellent quality.By far the best #11 Ive found.

You can definitely tell a difference when you pop off 1 of these compared to most others.(just the cap)

CCI musket caps... They burn hotter. I have some german musket caps that are water proof but they do not burn as hot as the CCi's

I only use RWS #11 caps and have for the past 15+ years. I have uses CCI, Remington and even put on a nipple for musket. The only advantage to the musket cap is the size it is better with gloves and mittens. I hunt both sides of the Mountains and have had only one failure and that was due to getting someones cap off the dash when the bull stood in the middle of the road. It took two hits with the side lock to fire a CCI Mag cap. Stick with the cap that work the best with your gun and protect it from the weather, for me I use plain old nail polish on the edge of the cap and has worked everytime and use a good nipple like a "Hot Shot".

#11 are the only thing I have used. haven't had the need to try anything else. They seem to work just fine.

#11 with a TC flamethrower- haven't had misfires, and doesn't clog up since there are 3 holes on the breech side of the nipple.

Is a musket cap still legal?  ie "a traditional style percusion cap", like the regs say?  ..thought we had to use #11's per the regs... :dunno:

Musket caps have always been legal. We cannot use 209 primers in WA though.

I use a musket cap and have never had a problem. I like them because of the size, much easier to handle for me.

I tend to use the #11 magnums as well. I've never had a misfire with them.

I shoot a TC Blackdiamond in .50 and they always get the job done.

I have a T/C Black Diamond XTR.  I've had misfires with #11's if it had been raining.  I switched to those German brand musket caps and have never had a misfire.  They are bigger and have a lot more flame.  I also dunked my gun in water for a couple of seconds and it fired as advertised.  Try that with a #11 and all you'll hear is a pop if that.  My wife had a chance at a nice doe once and the piece of crap cci's she had in percussion caps wouldn't even go off.
