6.4l Powerstroke Anyone?
« on: March 28, 2014, 09:11:12 PM »
I am going to be in the market for a new "to me" Diesel pickup pretty soon. I've been doing some serious research on the net on all the newer Diesel pickups. I had a 2nd gen 24v Cummins for 9 years and did some serious work to it as far as go fast stuff I loved the cummins but hated the 4 speed auto. I had the trans built to handle some serious power but the 4 speed just doesn't have the gear spacing the Cummins needs for towing IMO. I want to weigh the options heavily this time before I jump into another Diesel. I know they all have gone to a 6 speed auto which a great improvment IMO. I also know the Ford 6.4l has a 5r110 behind it which is a 5 speed but from what i've read its a good trans in stock form.

I've had a 2012 Tacoma trd off road for the last two years and love it but the family is growing and I need to be able to tow more than a Mid size or a 1/2 ton is capable of.

So anyone have a 6.4l? Love it? hate it? How do you drive it, like you stole it or like an old man? Is it stock? if not what mods do you have. Would you do it over again?

Also you shop guys I'd love to hear from you the good the bad the ugly.

Thanks in advance.

The 6.4 is a modified 6.0, therefore has shown to have a lot of the same issues the 6.0 leaker   liter has.
I'd steer clear.

I hear that. So lets imagine, I were to get rid of all the mileage killing factory crap and program it properly. I don't have to worry about emissions testing.  I also would like to get a lift for my shop anyway so pulling the cab will eventually not be a problem. I figure I can afford to buy a lift with the money I wouldn't have to spend on the trans after the additional power, from my research the Ford trans holds up much better than the others. I don't mind working on my own stuff but I don't want to be repairing it every weekend. Modding I'm fine with but I don't want something that needs constant repair. Would that be enough to change your mind on the ford? Or am I just asking for trouble.

This is all hypothetical so please feel free to open fire.

Really...I think that a guy has to spend a few thousand bucks on a 6.0 and they'd be mostly good to go.

I quoted an EGR cooler and an oil cooler replacement on a 6.0 the other day and if I recall, it was $3600.00+tax. If you mod it to make more power...you should plan on blowing head gaskets...at which point, do an ARP head stud kit instead of the stock head bolts. Not sure I'd recommend worrying about the head studs until/unless it blows the head gaskets.

If you don't mind working on it, have the tools and the skills to fix what breaks, go for it. They have a world of power and get decent mpg's.

I guess I'd also plan to put lower or all the ball joints in it at some point too.
