best 1000+ yard range finder
« on: March 29, 2014, 07:02:26 PM »
We seem to have maxed out our current range finders, so it's time to find a better one. I tried a Bushnell 1600 ARC and it worked pretty well on rocks and such out to just under 1000 yards. We've also been using a TruPulse 200 and we've had pretty good results out to right about 1000 yards on rocks. Every once in a while we can get a hit a little farther if the conditions are just right.

At this point there aren't that many options which will really out class this unit on a consistent basis. I'm almost to the point of picking up a Vectronix PLRF 10 and being done with it. The goal is a unit that will range beyond 1500 yard on any target.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

Andrew

I have a leica 1200.  I am learning to scope distances.  It takes a lot of practice and I am not very good at it.

Leica 1600, but at those distances you might need a Vectronix. I've ranged reflective objects at over2000 yards with the Leica, but have also been unable to range some objects under less than optimal conditions at 600.

My Zeiss RF will do it every time and quickly.  My Swarovski would definitely do it, but has to "think".  My Geovid HDs will do it, but not as consistently as the Zeiss or Swarovski.  The Zeiss is the most consistent/responsive.

Hmm I'm starting to see a pattern here. One move vote for the Leica 1600b

I know my  Zeiss will do 1300+ , can't remember longest read though, sorry. The read out's are very fast at any range with this unit.

This statement gets my vote.

This is pretty much where I'm at right now. The Leica, Zeiss and Swaro will make hits past 1000 (and sometimes much further) under the right conditions, but so will the TruPulse that we have. It seems like the next practical step up is the Vectronix unit. I'm all for buying the Leica, but not to only gain 200 yards over what we have.

If I were looking for a unit to use while hunting, the Leica would be may choice without a doubt. It's the perfect combination of size, weight, and range for hunting. Since this is much more for just recreational shooting I'm not worried as much about the size or weight. While a reliable 1000 yard unit is more than adequate for any hunting I'd do, it comes up a little short for just plinking.
