Salt?
« on: March 29, 2014, 11:52:42 PM »
How many months or years will 50# bag of trace mineral salt attract deer and elk before you add another bag and how often do you guys add another 50# to a existing salt lick? Kind of a dumb question, just curious how often everybody refreshes there salt licks?
You sure you know how to skin griz pilgram

When I used it I would refresh it every couple months. There is one spot that the pile has been gone for two years and they still tear up the ground.

Another thing to keep in mind is they will stop using it in August. So you don't have to bother refreshing it until the following winter.

really depends on how much activity and if you have elk hitting it. My elk salts I can dump 50# every month or so and its gone! some deer ones just a 50# bag will last April to July

I had 1 50# bag on each of my salt licks last summer. Had a ton of elk on it along with a bunch of deer. They're still tearing up the ground as it leached into the soil. Probably could have put another down but really saw no need. Put it down in June and it was still going strong in October.

Mine never stopped getting hit. I've got pictures of animals in mine right through October.

About mid July theres a drastic drop in deer activity this is for whitetails mind you in NE WA. This is an observation I have witnessed over the last 10 years and thousands of pics. Even the elk drop way off come mid August.

I certainly don't doubt you, but that has not happened on my cameras in SE WA with the elk or the deer. I've had them out for 2 years. Lots more elk than deer.

Ill get every buck in the area from May to late June and almost daily then bucks start showing every few days then once a week then they just disappear which then leads me to think they have moved off, but I dump some apples and they show up

Bh4ever I am going to ask an even dumber question!

What's the deal with a bag of salt? Are you just opening a big old bag of loose salt and then dumping it all over the ground? Is this what you call a "salt lick?"  Last I checked a salt like is a 10 pound cube that is placed on the ground. Not sure why you would want to dump additional loose minerals all over and around it.  :dunno:

So you open up a 50 pound bag and dump it all over the ground? or just open up the side and let them eat out of it?
