Garmin rino 650 question
« on: May 18, 2014, 05:55:50 PM »
I just purchased the 650 and also installed the Hunting GPS Washington map chip. It was my understanding that the huntinggps map chip has a 24k topo layer. I've been getting familiar with the unit today at home and decided to use the "where to" button to search my elk spot. I'm not seeing topo lines at all. Is there a setting I need to change to see topo lines or do I actually need to be up in the hills to be able to see the topo lines?

One main reason for getting a handheld gps for me was to be able to pick good routes and also locate saddles and benches and go right to them.

any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

I have the same setup just put chip in and go you have to zoom in quit a ways before you get elev boundary lines but you can test it by just clicking the curser and info should pop up.

I'm confused. I have the chip installed. If I use the "where to" search function on the rino and type in a known hilly area, go to it on the map, and zoom in I don't see any topo lines.

U should see them. U can go into your setting and make sure your chip is reading.

I went into "map information" and it says the hunt gps map is enabled. I also tried the factory reset button in case I had changed a setting earlier that I wasn't aware of.

If it says enable then it should be working. When you go to maps put the pin where your at and hit the top right button with 3 lines in it. It should come up with landowner info and gmu info. If that comes up I'd say it's working take it out in the hills and try. If that's not coming up there's an issue with your card. I've tried Almost ALL gps and found this garmin 655t to be by far the best. Hope you get it working!

Land owner name and gmu shows up but still no topo lines. Even if I zoom in on a mountain I'm not getting topo lines. I've got the 650 which doesn't come with the preloaded 100k topo map like the 655t does but the hunting GPS map is supposed to give me a 24k topo layer. Maybe I should take the chip back and order one that's just straight up topo.

Also I'm not seeing any roads or major interstates labeled on my screen. Something has got to be off that I'm not seeing.

Ok, not sure what exactly I did but I went into settings and turned off some of the zoom settings and now have topo lines and some road names. I'm wondering if I even need the huntinggps chip though because I don't really ever find myself needing to know land owner info I feel like.

What topo maps do you guys recommend for handhelds?

Well I admit sometimes it's nice to see GMu and property most the time I don't need it.
And I think the topos just clutter things up.
My buddy has it but I do not.
