FOC questions
« on: May 23, 2014, 10:03:08 AM »
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on new arrows.. if you recall I asked about 3 or 4 fletch.
Problem is, the more I learn, the more confusing things get, and I know I'm over thinking this.
Huntersfriend web says foc 7-15% is acceptable.
I'm currently shooting a Hoyt CE with the old Fuel cams, 68 lbs, 27" arrow and 100gr tip, and now learning my FOC has been about 10%.
If I somewhat duplicate what I was shooting I'd go with the Carbon Express mayhem 350 and run with a 10.4% FOC  a 125gr tip would bring it up to 12.6, but more arrow weight than I want.  (And I have to buy new broadheads)
OR -
For more $$$  I could get the Maxima Red, keep the weight the same with 125 gr broadheads and get 13.2% FOC

What FOC do you find 'best', or is 10% reasonable, any significant difference between 10 and 12?  I don't have the funds to buy and test different configurations....
 :bash:

Wish some of you guys lived close to Bellevue, good conversation for over a beer.

Thanks

Did your arrows and broadheads shoot well with the ten percent FOC? If so no need to change a thing unless you want too.

Had trouble dialing in everything last year, also if there is improved accuracy to be had I'm all for it.

Btw -sorry about the dbl post.  Things were really slow last night and this morning and my computer implied no connection on my first post.

Johnb - I am assuming you are looking at the Mayhem and not the Mayhem Hunter.  Three fletched with Blazer vanes and no wraps.

10% is fine in most circumstances.  But it isn't as forgiving in various weather conditions as heavier FOC.  Especially in wind and rain.  And of course 10% with a 1" short profile broadhead and max helical vanes is probably better than 15% if combined with a 1.25" long broadhead and straight fletching.  So there are few absolutes and compromises are almost always required.

One of the things I ALWAYS do with my Carbon Express shafts is to take the inserts they come with and immediately upon arriving home...throw them in the trash!!  I bought a bunch of the Beman ViBrake inserts before they stopped making them, but the Easton CB Insert is only a couple grains lighter at 21 grains.  Better insert, higher quality and they give you an additional 10 grains over the CE garbage.  This should put you at about 11% which is pretty dang good and a whole lot cheaper than buying new broadheads!

If you wanted to go even further without spending the big bucks on broadheads you could dump the CE Launchpad nock and replace it with Easton's Micro-Lite.  In doing this you shorten the nock giving better durability as well as improving alignment.  This should help you reach the 11.5% mark.  All inserts and nocks should be just a fraction of the cost you would incur by purchasing new 125 grain broadheads.

Easton may not have the best all carbon arrow on the market today.  But I do not think there is any question about the quality of their nocks and inserts.  Best there is IMO!!

He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Radsav,
I notice I can still buy Beman Vibrake inserts, so I take it by "not making them" you mean they've outsourced the manufacture and the quality isn't where it was?
(Or many of these online shops don't update their websites)

Looking at Lancaster Archery, mountain archery, or Huntersfriend as online sources, but when possible I like to buy local, however nothing terribly local to Bellevue.

I appreciate your help, and enjoy all your posts.

Thanks

The ViBrake was discontinued and replaced with the Hot Tail.  I believe the Hot Tail was discontinued by the manufacture this year.  Speed freaks drive sales so there just wasn't as much interest.  I assume there are plenty of ViBrakes still out there available.  But, without replacement availability it's a little scary for most to design an arrow they may not be able to repeat next time.  Should be able to find CB inserts just about everywhere and for years to come as well.

Hot Tail wasn't much of an improvement over just a simple CB insert.  The ViBrake not only was 23 grains but it worked too!!  Biggest thing is to get that insert weight up to 21 or 23 grains to improve that FOC without having to drop a hundred or so on broadheads.
