Nothing wrong with Royboy asking around for prices regardless of the reason.  He does not need a excuse.  We all do it all the time, what is the number one thing advertised for any item - The Price!

Way to splash back in the pool.
It's a TIKKA thing..., you may not understand.

Its called running a business.. of course everyone wants the cheapest deal they can find but keep in mind YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR .. Just like framing a house ...some contractors charge 3 bucks a foot to frame a house and some charge 5 ...I charge more because I care about my pride and quality ...I make sure every house I build is done the way it was meant to be ....same as a good taxi does with his or her work ...if that helps  :dunno: :chuckle:

Exactly!
If you do quality work you can charge top dollar and it is worth every penny. Just because you can charge top dollar does not mean joe blow framer down the road deserves top dollar. He may try, but it doesn't mean eventually it will catch up to him. It pays to shop around, but price shouldn't be the only deciding factor. Due diligence is always in order when spending hard earned money.

I'm curious to know how one establishes a price for "my quality of work" without knowing what others in the same industry charge. Is there a standard taxidermist price list for quality?

Now that would be a tough one.
A quality taxi can earn and deserve price x, but because they can, it shouldn't mean that the average taxi does.

Not taxidermy but in the fine arts world (which I consider taxi to be an art form) a real common base number to use is $30 hr for those just starting out at pricing.  So the stone I have 90 hours into would be about 3000 in a gallery.  This is just sort of a base number to consider, you then have an artists reputation and desirability which will change that.  This  is why a better known but maybe less talented artist can sometimes command a crazy price.  It also has a whole lot to do with ones ability to sell themselves.  I can sell an artist I believe in but I don't sell myself at all, I just make stuff.
