Recommendations for a new 22-250
« on: April 06, 2014, 11:31:35 AM »
Hi guys. I’ve decided to buy a 22-250 rifle but want to get some input from the group about recommendations on particular models or favorites. I intend to use it strictly for varmint hunting, especially coyotes, and shooting at the range for fun. I’ve looked at the new Howa kryptek dipped rifle which would be nice for blending in out on a stand,  but it is pretty much unavailable everywhere right now. I don’t mind spending money for quality, and I want to get the most accurate one that I can find. Any thoughts and recommendations are appreciated.

Well, if I get to spend your $$$$$. Let's get a Kimber Varmint or Pro Varmint. Whichever you choose I will be happy with. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Remington Model 7 Predator, I shoot a Rem. 722 with a LVSF 22-250 barrel screwed on.  I also have a Savage 20" heavy barrel 22-250, nice on the bench but a pig in the field.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I'm no particular fan of the looks of the Savage action, just something about it doesn't appeal to my eye, but there is certainly no denying how well Savage rifles shoot right out of the box.  I don't recall exactly which model it is but Savage sells one of their models of 22-250 with a 1-9 twist barrel.  I don't know of any other maker that has anything faster then a 1-12 twist and just about all the others hang 1-14tw tubes on them.  I like taking advantage of the bigger case capacities of some of these chamberings, such as a 22-250, and shoot heavy for caliber bullets.  Or at least have that as an option if I ever want to.  So if I was looking for an off the shelf gun I can just go buy and have a good chance it shoots well, I'd look for a Savage 22-250 with the 1-9tw barrel.

Howa makes a very good rifle but I believe all of their 22-250's are fitted with a 1-14tw barrel.  Nothing wrong with a 1-14tw but you will be much more limited on bullet selection if you want to shoot anything much over 50gr. bullets.  If a 1-14tw works for you and you come across a Weatherby Vanguard in 22-250 that catches your eye, remember, the Vanguard is made by Howa.

:) Tikka, either lite, varmit or stainless lite. Depends on what weight you like. Varmit is like 8.5 lbs, I think. lite is 6.4 or so. Both very accurate. Tikka. T3., If you insist on spending more money go for the Sako.
