Shoot or No Shot? Episode 2.
« on: April 08, 2014, 11:30:46 AM »
Tale of the tape:  6th day of your 8 day (insert state here) archery hunt; 25 September 2013; 8:45 AM; the bull you now see is slightly uphill, 40 yards from your position (you're in the direction of the red arrow).  As you worked your way up the steep sidehill 1/2 hour earlier, you heard a vocal bull moving left to right up the semi flat finger ridge, probably on the same small ridge the bull you see now is stopped on.  As you got closer (now within 100 yards) of an "obvious" herd bull up to your right (direction of yellow arrow), you can hear the bull knocking the snot out of some brush, and throwing out some warning bugles with grunts (perhaps he has harassing satellites?).  You can now also hear cows having some morning tea and crumpet conversation.  Diaphram in mouth, you're getting ready to ninja your way into the bull to your upper right when you hear a close locator ring out down the finger ridge to your left and he's coming fast!  The satellite is coming in to the herd bull's noises on a course that leads him direclty above you on the little ridge trail!  You draw as he enters the small clearing and give a nervous grunt and whammo!!!  He stopped in the position you see him now.

Shoot or no shot here for you?  If you say shoot, please place a dot or X where your arrow is heading.

Reminder that if you save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, you'll be able to place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg and add the marked up pic with your post.

 :yeah:
The only way you might not shoot is because you think the other bull is bigger. If you cant knock this shot out you got a serious case of bull fever!
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Yup....the reason I say this is id like to put my arrow alil further forward on the off side, and if you can see the pocket you shouldn't have to worry bout bone

I think Tony's shot placement works, "slightly uphill" is what gets me in the description.  10-12 feet above me I use Tony's spot, 4-5 feet above me I might go over 2" to the right and 1-2" up from his dot.  Again it really depends on how "slightly uphill" the bull is.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Darn right I am shooting.  Exactly like TonyMiller said.  And, in 1 hour I will be packing meat, then helping somebody else with their tag.  Season's over.

Thanks, Phantom.   :hello:

The only reason I wouldn't be letting an arrow fly is if I had a raffle tag or Governors tag in my pocket otherwise I'm putting one right where Tony placed his dot.

Yup lol I think that'd do the trick...as mentioned the shot angle would be a factor but knowing how my mind works in these moments I'd be lucky to remember to aim abit more forward

I'm with Tony on this one.  Maybe up a little higher but he's a dead elk in 20 seconds either way
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I say right where Tony put the dot. Who cares about the opposite shoulder the damage will already be done before the arrow hits shoulder. :dunno:

Yep.  An arrow on the "x" is going to be risky.  With a rifle that's a money shot, but with an arrow you cant risk hitting that shoulder.
