Completely new to it all but excited to get out there!!
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:48:39 AM »
So I haven't hunted in about 30 years. This year I decided I wanted to give it a try so I bought a PSE Brute X and have been shooting 3-4 times per week. I am pretty solid out to about 40 yards but after that it is pretty unpredictable. I also bought a few acres in GMU 621 completely surrounded by state lands which is where I am planning on hunting. With all that said the thing I really lack in knowledge I have NO clue what I am doing. Can anyone recommend any good resources to help me get started. Should I do my first hunt with a guide to try and pick up knowledge? What are the things that I absolutely need for my first hunt?

Thanks appreciate any advice.

If you're going to hunt your own land on a few acres in 621 I wouldn't think a guide would be necessary.  Trail cams would probably be helpful, maybe even a food plot.

Search in the equipment section for a bowhunter checklist.

Get some tree stands and ground blinds. On your own property, a ladder stand would be nice. You could leave it up year around. And as someone else said, get some trail cameras.

621, not much opps for Elk but you must be thinking Blackies. Get Boyd Iversons book. Blacktail tactics. And never look back!!!!

Thanks I appreciate the advice. I am heading out there this weekend to put up some more trail cameras and do some scouting. I will post any good pictures that I get.

Google Earth so you can get the lay of the land and look for newer clear cuts for good vegetation for the deer.

621 is fantastic. Don't know what those other guys are talking about. Your in a great area. 624 is awesome for Blacktails as well. 621 has everything you want, you just have to find it. I almost always see elk in the Buckhorn during the summer. Blacktails in that area are stupid and curious. You can usually close 50 yards by just fast walking straight to them. You will get better bucks in 621 than in 624 but it closes for late season deer so get them early. Good luck.

Some archery shops also do lessons. It will help you out allot. They can answer any questions you have.

I seen this and just about died, Elk in the Buckhorn somebody is smoking something. I live in the area and hunt it harder then most and I can tell you good bucks don't come easy. Coyle is decent as is 621 but decent is all that it is. Elk in the Buckhorn that's funny
Will hunt for food
