Second Quality Elk Draw

How many of you have ever pulled your second choice instead of your first in the quality elk categories?

I always do the draw apps for my Dad and I. In 2006 he was drawn for his second choice. It worked out fine. We didn't know the area quite as well, but nothing spending almost every weekend in the summer scouting wouldn't take care of

I had 8 quality bull points in 2010 and was drawn for my second choice.
Worked out fine though, I've hunted that area a lot in the past. I wouldn't put
in for a unit I didn't want to get drawn for.

If you don't want your second choice as bad as you do your first, and your willing to wait many years for that once in a lifetime tag. Don't put that second choice down, but with only two choices for quality, you can always find a choice good enough for second!

I would expect it to happen frequently. In fact, I would expect a second choice to be selected more often than a first choice.

Most applicants put down a first choice that is more difficult to draw than a second choice.

What was your first choice? (If you don't mind) I probably am still a decade away with 9 points for that unit.  :bash: I only apply for the Nooksack. You give me hope though.

I don't remember.  :chuckle:  It was a great hunt but I drew too many tags that year and barely remember any of it. You put in for a bunch of hunts and hope to get one, not 4. You may draw that tag this year, next year or, what is most likely, never. The majority of people who put in for this tag will never draw it in a lifetime of applying. But, some lucky dogs gotta win!

I had 12 points going into the 2009 elk draw and pulled a Goose Prairie tag as a second choice. Our group usually put in for Dayton exclusively, bottom line I thought I screwed up. I ended up seeing 2 elk on that hunt and both were great bulls running together. I shot the one with the biggest "whale tails",It scored 356 gross.. I guess I didnt screw up too bad. Its in my avatar. Thanks to Klickriverchromer and his buddy for pulling over and coming down to help pack the head and cape out for the last haul. Sometimes a guy gets lucky and shoots em somewhat close to the road.

Nope! You did not screw up.  That is awesome!
