Barska scope...?

I picked up a Barska 6.5-20x50mm scope at a gun show a number of years back, and I used to have it on my cz452 Mannlicher in .17hmr, and I could pick a tick off a horses ass at 100 yards with that thing if there were no wind... But recently I just picked up a Remington 700 in 7mm magnum. The scope on the rifle currently is a 3-12x40mm and it works, but I have this barksa scope, but I don't know if it would be worth installing and sighting in or if the 7mm mag will shake it apart

Any opinions?

Pretty sure a 7mm would destroy it. I HAD a Barska on my 10/22 till the reticle fell out of sight.

I have Barska 3 to 12 Airgun scopes on 3 of my 4 pellet guns and love them.  Someone told me that they fell apart, but mine haven't.  Maybe it was growing pains for the older models.  Mine have been great, and I think they are the best kept secret in scopedom!    Try it, and if it falls apart, send it back and maybe they'll send you a new one.  My Barska scopes have a lifetime warranty.  Maybe yours does, too.

Assuming you will be using the 7mm rifle for hunting, personally I would not choose the Barska, not because it isn't a good scope, but rather because it probably has a very small field of view at 100 yards.  Wet weather should also be considered if your scope is up to task.  The minimum scope I've experienced that works in the extreme wet and cold conditions is the Tasco World Class series.  From there it's a matter of what your pocketbooks capable of.

if you want to go inexpensive but have decent quality that won't come apart on a 7mm, save up a couple bucks and buy a vortex or leupold VX-1 (or the Redfield equivelant). 

I put a VX-2 on my 300 RUM after destroying two bushnell scopes from the recoil. No problems after that.

I haven't got a vortex scope yet, but its my next buy from Vortex. PM elknut1. I'm sure he can get you a screaming deal on a Vortex scope.

What would you choose?  All but a few are made in China now.  Probably all in the same place...

If I didn't want to break the bank, I'd go Nikon, Leupold, Redfield, Zeiss Conquest, Vortex, Minox, Steiner, Meopta, Pentax, Weaver, or Burris (not a fan of, bad experience).  I think you could get into any of these for $400 or less if you shopped around and depending on the model.

I own Leupold VXII, Nikon Monarch, 2 Redfield (Leupold version), and 1 Burris, and would buy any of these again with the exception of the Burris.

Strange that you don't like Burris scopes.  I have several of them, and have had no problems.  Also have Nikon Buckmasters and a Nikon Coyote Special,  (looks like a version of the Buckmaster), and like them also.  Nikon must be phasing out the Buckmaster line, because there are some good deals on them now...

The Burris is okay, but the first time I used it, mounted on my .338 WM, the recoil knocked the reticle loose and it had to be repaired. This happened again, 2 or 3 years later.  That scope has been moved to a 30-06 and haven't had any problems since, but the experience made a bad impression and I won't be buying another Burris.  My other scopes, mounted on .308, 30-06, .338 WM, .300 RUM, .308 Lazzeroni Warbird, and .375 H&H have had zero issues, so Burris didn't make the cut.

What is the 3-12x40   Id bet its better than the Barfska anyway.  I agree with looking at Vortex and Zeiss.  I do not like VX 1,2, or 3........too much money for entry level quality.  I also dont like Nikon.  But thats my opinion only...........having owned many scopes in the last 40+ years.

I suggest Cameraland in New York, they have a Zeiss 4-14X50 with target turrets for 499.  Id also look at Optics Planet.

avoid Barska at all cost. I still trust the good old Leupold
