Elk in the methow ?
« on: April 21, 2014, 08:36:14 AM »
Hey guys first 2014 report ! Got away from work for the weekend finally went up into Mazama / Winthrop area my usuall :) and was supprised on what I saw . I've heard stories of elk being in the area but in my 10 years I've never seen em but that changed this weekend . Spotted a cow hanging out in some sage pretty cool to see over there. Looking forward for the season ! Happy hunting everyone

I saw a Bull last summer up 8 mile. Couldn't tell what size he was since it was almost dark but looked to be either a 5 or 6 pt.

Theres been elk in the valley for years, you were fortunate enough to find them in the open. Known guys to hunt them in the Sawtooths for sometime, can't say they were successful but they do get in those valleys and hang out. I am sure if you ask well sesaoned hunters like Ida you will hear about seeing them back in the good ol days.

Yea I've heard rumors about em and stories from my old man just never seen one in the Valley before was pretty shocked seeing her I had to get the spotting scope out and verify hahah. She was with a large group of mulies just sunning in the sage . Would be really cool to see more of them pop up

I've seen lone cows a few times in the valley right off of 20. I've seen a herd of them a few times on loup loup.

A friend of mine always jokes that there is only 1 elk in the Methow.  He says "I've seen it from time to time... Sometimes it's a cow, sometimes it's a bull.  But there is only one."

There have been several elk tagged over the years in the Methow.  A very nice bull was taken last year.

Here's a shot I've posted before.

Ever since people started putting pics of their elk kills in the papers more and more elk hunters and camps seem to show up out there. :chuckle:
