It was bound to happen
« on: April 21, 2014, 08:54:02 PM »
Well it finally happened to me. The wife went along with me for a trip on Saturday. We hunted around and finally found a bird doing a whole lot of gobbling on the neighboring property.

I got within about 300 yards of him and started talking to him and he got all excited. I did some excited yelp and excited purrs and he loved it. He was hung up for a while but slowly moving our way. After about 30 minutes he was within 100 yards so I shut up. I started seeing bits and pieces of him in the brush. I at times could see the nice fan.

He finally came up to the fence and disappeared and it sounded like he was stuck in the fence. Later I realized he crawled under a field fence. He popped out at 55 yards and I rushed it and made a clean miss. Gun jammed and game was over.

It is the first time I have missed a bird I have called in. I missed them in the early days of stepping on birds and taking crack shots.   I'm thinking it's the pressure of my wife sitting next to me. It was a fun and vocal bird. I will get him eventually. I worked him Sunday too and blew a chance at him.

Ouch! It'll sting for a bit! I remember a tom I missed. I forgot to load my gun when I left the truck. Of course I call a nice tom to within 20yds. I point my gun at him and "click" nothing. I try to load another and "click". By the time I fumbled around and found a shell the tom ran out to about 50yds and stopped where I promptly missed him. That bird still haunts me! It was a fun hunt and we played cat and mouse for quite a while before he committed. Shoulda been in my beard and spur collection!

It was a great hunt. It does sting. Glad she got to see a good show. I would have had a second shot but the first round stuck in the barrel. I even pulled the trigger for a second time to hear a click. I had to take a knife and back the spent shell out. I have heard others say they have had problems with Kent shells doing that.

I shoot Kent's for waterfowl but I really don't like their turkey shells. I never got a decent pattern with them and still have a partial box I won't hunt with.

I to avoid Kent and Fiocchi (sp) ammo. I have never got a good pattern with either brand through a couple different guns and chokes  :dunno: I plan on using what i have left for a dumb coyote  :chuckle:.
