deer or elk???
« on: November 24, 2008, 05:04:15 PM »
For the first time in many years, I'm starting to shoot my bow again - it's an old 62" 53# Hoyt recurve that I've had for a long time. Used to shoot it pretty well. At this point my skills are rusty, but they'll improve with practice. Am not interested in buying a new bow at this time.

I've primarily been a mule deer hunter, now and again I'll go for elk. Live and hunt mostly around Wenatchee in Chelan & Douglas County. Am mostly looking to get more field time, and am not particularly concerned with getting a "trophy" buck or bull with the bow. A cow or a doe would be fine with me although I'd not turn down a shot at a good mulie buck!  :)

Next year what do you recommend I start out with for archery? Deer or elk? Or both? Why?

Thanks, Guy

Most archery hunting areas overlap elk and deer. I go elk hunting but took a nice 4x3 mulie when the opportunity presented itself. Don't limit your self to one animal, Archery is tough. I say increase you odds by hunting an area with multiple open seasons. I did not buy a bear tag this year and had a bear at 25 yards for half an hour. Have fun. Mike

I'd probably go for both.  You seem to know your limitations so if a good bull/buck showed up in range I'm sure you would be OK.  A cut on contact broadhead and that fine Hoyt bow of yours should make for a great time.

Have fun

i constantly see monster mulies while archery hunting elk. i mean 160+ bucks so the fallowing year i would buy an archery deer tag along with my archery elk tag and never see a deer. i did get within bow range to a big 5x5 mulie but the does that were with him busted me. i figured that was enough for that and went back to modern firearm deer. but never get a chance for a shot then either  :bash:

Start out hunting deer for a week, then deer and elk for 2 weeks, then try for deer for another week. :PAlso hold out for a trophy....until something else shows up. :archer:
