What would you have done to LEO's performing their job? LEOs drive over the speed limit to catch violators, carry guns into banks, bars, etc.... They have a whole bunch of extra's they can do that you can't. Is this what is bugging you? Not sure I get your anger...

 :dunno:

I don't get it either. I have no issue with this. Lots of rules don't apply to cops doing their jobs. I grew up with a respect for law enforcement and it may or may not come as a surprise, but I never have any issues with law enforcement people. I don't give them a hard time and they don't give me a hard time.

Really? If a lake is off limits to outboards, then by gosh it better be off limits for everybody, not just those selective few. There's a reason for this in some lakes, and I respect that, but for LEO to uphold that to do "boat checks" is bullchit.

So you are opposed to getting medi-vaced out of the back country you hiked into? NO motorized vehicles?

If this were the only issue I had to gripe about, I'd consider myself a lucky man.

Good grief.

If it's the LAW that no motorized vehicles are allowed then the authorities are reqd by LAW to comply as well regardless of the situation. You have an issue in the wilderness you should expect to be coming out via stretcher or mule.

Exactly the comment I expected. Wouldn't expect anything less. Being I have to comment, obviously no rules should apply when a life is on the line, but if you feel it's okay for LEO to patrol a non outboard lake opening day with motors running then so be it. Common sense and decency is obviously forgotten on your side of the state. Sad

Opening day there's usually always a few folks that flip their boat.   I think people would change their views real quick if a speed boat got to them and their kids within seconds of flipping. The lake waters are damn cold this time of year and hypothermia can set in real fast.
Besides what's one gas engine one day outta the year gonna hurt anyways?

Couple of responses to issues brought up.  I would have had to "yell" to get their attention because they had the noise of their motor to contend with and they weren't close enough to me to speak in a normal tone of voice.  I have not personally had a bad interaction with law enforcement and I expect that will continue for the rest of my life.  But let's be honest, a number of law enforcement personnel have a power trip mentality, and being called out within earshot of a lot of other fisher folks is the sort of thing that I would expect to bring that power trip to the surface had one or both of those guys been that type.  I didn't think it was worth the risk.

And if they had a legitimate reason for running that motor I wouldn't have given it a second thought.  But they didn't.

I'll be sure to remember that line next time I get caught doing something.  What's one poached elk out of a herd of thousands, officer? :chuckle:

I still think it's all about "SAFETY". If a boat flips they need the power to get there fast. Every second counts and electric motors don't cut it. If you've ever fished opening day there are a ton of stupid people doing stupid things, maybe they deserve to drown :dunno:

So, if something bad happens all they have to do is lower and start the outboard, then plane over to assist.  As for checking all the non-emergency folks...use the same methods as everyone else.

Today we saw a guy get a warning ticket in a 12 foot boat with an electric motor for not having a whistle and then they gave him one.

Good point! but it still takes some time to switch motors. Every second counts when a boat flips
