what kind of duck calls do you like?

well I am looking at getting myself some good stocking stuffers for christmas and would like to find another good duck call, I have been using a Quaker Boy Raspy Quack Master and some kind of Haydel call...what call would be a good one...

if u have the cash you cant go wrong with a RNT, i have a acrylic short barrel and love the sound i have and my dad has a timbre that has great tone and volume for in close calling... the reeds to stick a little bit more then i would like but after i treated them with some   rain-x they do fine

Double reeds are great, but learn to blow a single reed..you can make more sounds and go up and down more scales.....an open water single reed and a softer raspy double should be on everyones lanyard

I have an Echo Timber, kind of pricey, but once you learn to call on those single reeds, oh man, they make your calling sound night and day better.

i blow bill saunders and zink calls. they are great. i like the saunders I5-Killer and Traffic for geese and really any of the zink single reeds. i also have a foiles strait meat mallard.

I have echo open water, HS bill collector, but the "mule" from the DC is by far the best sounding call I own, and hands down makes them turn better than anything.

Funniest part is the open water was 80 bucks....the mule was 9.

Don't know what it is about those Louisiana boys but they do make a great cheap duck call.

I would also recommend getting yourself a good single reed call.  In my opion a feeder call sounds best on a single reed call.  I miss the OLTS.

i just got an XR-2 which i like a lot, but i sure do love my DR85. 
It doesnt take much to kill a duck

Haydel's DR-85, I've had it for 10+ years, it's copenhagen stained and blows wet and cold.

Use Troy Taylor duck call.  I think they are called Tayler Talkers.

I've been thinking of picking up a new call as well. I'm willing to spend some money, and have even thought of buying a custom made acrylic.

I blow a cheap-o primos timber wench, and have turned plenty of ducks with it and feel pretty confident with my calling skills. Think its time to move up to a single reed and get some more versatility out of my calling.

Really??? Over the last 20 seasons of duck hunting, I've averaged somewhere around one band for every 70-75 ducks(this week wasn't typical with 3 bands in 15 birds).  I think there's 36 duck bands on my lanyard, you do the math... And I've blown a Haydel's or Primos that whole time. 

If you really think you're a better duck hunter because you've got $450 worth of duck calls around your neck, go for it.  You know what they say about guys with big trucks, they're trying to compensate for the lack of something else!

I tend to agree with GD, even though I haven't shot any bands yet.  I've called ducks off of other guys spreads with plenty of other competition calling at them too. I swear this past weekend i heard some of the worst calling I've ever heard in my life. I think ever call sold should come with an instructional cd. When I inherited my dad's calls, I practiced every day with an old cassette tape that he gave me to listen to. Learned the basics and then listened to lots of ducks after that.

Do him a favor and buy him a calling cd for x-mas! My hunting partner has invited a new guy that he knows the last couple times, and although he isn't the worst caller, he doesn't know when to lay off. He loves hail calling the ducks when they're right on top of us. I finally told him to shut up or i'm throwin his call in the pond. He didn't like that too much.

last time i checked the birds with bands dont care any more about what brand of call you use this is a mute point cuz one call or another is not going to get you any more banded birds, that is all luck. go to your local sporting good store and try a bunch of different calls and pick the one that works best with your hunting situation and calling style

Actually the point I was trying to make was that if you figure an average of 70 ducks for every band and you do the math multiplying 70 X the # of bands you can figure out that there can be success in duck hunting with calls that only cost $15.  And yes, that's all public land in the Yakima Valley and the Tri-Cities, very crowded areas that get hunted a lot!

But not all bands come because of "luck".  Try actually hunting for bands and see how lucky you can get.  It takes a lot more than "luck" to get enough birds in close enough and with their feet down to spot birds wearing jewelry.  I had it happen a couple of times in years past but I started actually looking for them last season and scored a couple in one day.  So far this season, I've done it 4 times.  I killed 3 of them and my 9 year old killed the other.  I don't do it all of the time, you've got to have the perfect conditions to make it work.

Has a hole drilled into the barrel..allows you to sound like 2 different hens...the problem with double reeds is they are monotone...you can't do scales very well.....thus you always sound like the same hen......the dual tone will break that up

I don't want a DR-85. I don't want to clean that many ducks or buy that many shells.
 I got one build for me by Jim Leith, don't think he makes calls any more. He was a sponsor on fowl play. Man he was a good guy, calls weren't spendy either. Jim knowing my problems (short bus) made me an easy blow double.

 Stopped by to meet him just outside Vancover Wa. on my way to Tillamook. Took him a tanks one of a kind (not meant to be) lantern stand and he had made me another.
 Wouldn't trade either for a high dollar call.I did freeze one up a couple times.(too much tongue I think   )
 My blowing still sucks but I'm trying to taper off.
