Anyone Hunting with a Tarp Setup?
« on: April 30, 2014, 11:01:26 PM »
My tent broke last year while spending the night at St. Helens.  Haven't replaced it yet.

So I don't have a place to sleep right now.  I'm curious what everyone is using... I'd like to continue to lighten up, and this is an opportunity to shed a pound and a half.

Is anyone using a tarp shelter?  What brands/materials do you prefer?  How do you handle the bugs?  Must-have features?

Thanks

I use a Kifaru Super Tarp and I'm real happy with it.This Company makes some very nice tarps as well cookecustomsewing.com
As far as bugs go if they are bad I break off a section of mosquito coil set it on a small piece of aluminum foil and light it

I bought a Zpacks Hexamid Solo Plus tarp for solo trips this year. So far I only have a couple nights in the yard with it, and I think I am going to like it. It weighs 7.4 oz. It is made of Cuben Fiber. You can get a nest with a bathtub floor and bug netting for it too.

At times I use a Kifaru paratarp.  Bugs haven't been an issue. The advantage of the paratarp is that its cut for setting up as you see in the photos and has tabs for attaching guy ropes (I use 90# sturgeon leader, which is very small and light). I don't carry poles and, instead, just break branches for poles. The tarp has tabs on one edge to measure the branches and has two small "cups" where the branches hold up the tarp to keep the sharp stick from poking through. With stakes, about 18 oz.

I also use a Go-Lite SL4 tent, which is technically a tarp. I use a Kifaru small stove in it as well. About 2 1/2 lbs for the tent and 2 1/2 for the stove.

Shawn did you do the stove pipe vent yourself, or have it done on the SL4 ?. I have the SL5 and have considered it

I purchased the stove jack from Titanium Goat (http://www.titaniumgoat.com/pipe-parts.html) and had Laurie Cantonwine in Vancouver (360-254-9098) sew it in. I know of one other stove jack she did on a Go-Lite tent after she did mine.  She did a fine job. She used to do all of Portland REI's sewing work.

Though the stove jack looks to be haphazardly placed, it isn't; I spent a lot of time thinking through its placement for my needs. I wanted to avoid cutting or sewing tent seams and needed the stove just off center to accommodate the tent center pole. Some guys run the pipe through the vents. I wanted to keep my vents.

The stove jack as a cover that velcros on the outside when not using the stove to keep the weather out. You can see in the second picture that the pipe hole has a cover on it.

I also had Laurie sew me the two vent covers using thin nylon. They have velcro tabs to keep them in place. I close and open them as needed to retain heat or ventilate the tent.  With the vents closed, the tent warms up a lot faster.

I used. 10 by 12 tarp last year slept three comfortably even with some rain we stayed dry and open configuration meant no condensation.  had sea to summit bug nets but did not need them.  Tarp was a Silnylon90 by Outdoor Equipment Supplier also check out some YouTube bushcraft videos on tarp rigging. there are great ways to simply rig and tension the tarp. Saved over 5 pounds from the tent load.
