Smoke Pole for Turkeys.

I mostly hunt northern Spokane or Eastern Stevens county, north of Spokane.

I have lost 7 hunting areas in the past couple of years due to older land owners deceasing and development.

I honestly do not know where I will hunt turkeys next spring with out having to drive some distance.

I am going to have to do a lot of scouting and talking to land owners. I need spots that I can get my wife into on the three wheeler.  Her leg is giving trouble.

The way the winter is going so far there should be little winter kill, but we have a lot of time to go.

I think I will give the TC some time in the field.  I am partial to the flint though.

I have alot of respect for anyone using a smokepole for Turkeys.  That is dang cool and getting back to your roots.  If it happens, I'd love to see the stories and the pic opps would be awesome!

I've shot to many to count w/my smoke pole. The one I remember the most was the first. A group of toms would roost above my house. It was a hog back and depending on where the hens roosted was the way they would go. The hens don't roost there, just toms. I've set up on this spot a lot of times. Shot a few but most go the other way. Will I was having one of those years where I thought I had them and off the other way they would go. So the next time they roosted there I went out 2 hrs before day light to set up at there tree with my decoys. It was dark and I knew I was close but didn't know witch tree they were in. I didn't want to shock gobble them because I was close and did not want to get busted. So I waited in the dark hoping for a gobble, but it was so early there would not gobble. Will I felt I should set up before it got daylight. About that time the train in the valley blew it's weasel, "gobble", "gobble". I about crapped my pants. They were right above me. I was standing at the base of there tree. I set out my decoys and backed down the hill. To make a long story short, when they came out of the tree they went after there hens on the other side of the hog back. I used every call in the book, they would gobble every time but still moved the other way. I had a wing bone call I made but have never tried, so what the hell I gave it a try and low and behold they started to come. A redhead popped up and they I could see his beard, "big tom". KA-BOOM. Smoke everywhere. I couldn't see if I got him because he flipped back wards down the other side of the hill. I reloaded and ran over to see 3 toms betting the crap out of the flopping tom I had just shot. This was before you could shoot two in one day or I would have had another one. These toms I shot w/my smoke pole. The two together I got in one day the first year the game dept. allowed it. After hunting in the morning w/no luck I went to another spot. On the way there my caps went down my defrosted in my pick-up I had one cap that I took off and set in in my ask tray. Well with one cap I took a long shot a one of these toms, I hit him hard but didn't kill him. I ran to my truck and went home and got more caps. He wasn't far from where I left him, but did have to finish him off.

I've laid a few low with a couple different BP's. I mostly shoot a 10g Pedersoli double I bought from Cabela's years ago. 1 1/2 oz shot, equal amount by volume of powder separated by three Wonder Wads, with one more Wonder Wad holdin'er all in place. Nothing like the sound of a floppin bird on the other side of that wall o' smoke

very cool guys, i have shot a tk one time and it grouped great but i am not a huge huge fan of turkey hunting i do hunt them every year and do well but i could not spend the money on just a muzzle shotgun for thunder chickens as wadell would say

I want too bad, once I finally eat one I shot with my bow then I'll head toward the Smoke/pole. I've tried for 6 years to win one of those damn TK2000 at the banquetswith no luck....could've bought a couple of them by now. But I did pick up a T/C encore a couple years ago in Modern 12ga, so maybe I'll just pick up a BP 12ga barrel for it.

And thanks for the tip on the wingbone call that'll be cool. Right now my #1 arrow is while carbon it is fletched with the feathers from my first big tom. But I can't wait til I can " Smoke" a turkey

When we take "Callie" out in early fall, I may be carrying my TK2000 ... I shot 120 grains with 2-1/4 oz of #6's .... it takes a couple minutes for the smoke to clear to see if you got one, but has proved highly accurate though ... the pattern is full !

I was having some issues w/consistence patterns so I talked to Tim at Clarks in Colville and he said I needed to pack my powder and wads. I was just seating them, not bouncing the rod. He also said to cut the cushions off a shot cup and load my shot in a cup. Patterns real good w/ 1 1/4 oz #5's and 69 gr. of Triple 7. Volume for Volume. I haven't killed a turkey w/my smoke pole for several years now, so I'm going out opening day w/it.

[The Gobble-stopper]

I used the TK 2000 teo years ago to get my washington slam with. Never had so much fun in my life. I was shooting a 2 1/2 ounce load through it and you couldnt miss, Shoots better than my 12 guage. All of you that havnt tried it, ought to. I noticed that the birds would almost jump the cap, like they do in archery when they jump the string. Got a couple coyotes while using it to, and it put em down quick.
