Yakima county bird down
« on: May 05, 2014, 08:04:03 AM »
Started my hike at daylight running a little late. Finally got to the spot I expected some birds to be and let out a few clucks. Nothing. Let out a few more and heard 2 gobble in the next draw. They sounded like jakes but I didn't care. It's getting late in the season. I worked to the bottom of a little bowl that was pretty open. I decided to set up by a big sage brush. I cut real loud and they gobbled again but this time a tom popped off right above me. Now my heart was pounding! I let out a few soft clucks and purrs and the other 2 kept going off but not him. I figured he was on his way in when I saw him about 80yds coming down the hill. I shut up and he slowly made his way in. He kept stopping and looking but I didn't say a peep. Finally he made it to about 40yds I decided that was it as slow as he was working in. I cut loud again he lifted his head up... bang flop! Mature tom missing a couple feathers from his fan, only half a beard with a white ring around the tip and 3/4 in spurs. Great textbook hunt! The other turkeys kept gobbling the whole time I was trying to get pics by myself. Can't wait for next year!
