Baxter and huge stump
« on: May 06, 2014, 05:34:14 AM »
I was shed hunting/looking for bear sign with my dog a few days ago and ran into this huge old stump. It is not a tourist destination or anything like that. It just sits hidden back in the woods. When I first saw it, I was taken by it's large size and knew that I wanted to photograph it. I wonder how long ago this thing was a sapling? We all have seen old stumps in the woods, this one just struck me by it's immense size.

I sat my hiking buddy/Baxter next to it for scale. Baxter goes with me wherever I go in the woods if I am not hunting to shoot an animal. I think I will get this picture framed because of Baxter being in the picture.

Baxter looks like he is interested in something the other way
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

He is incredible at spotting other animals before I do including bears! I trust his body movements as we move through the woods.

When I was in grade school we had a burnt out cedar stump that looked very much like that.  Inside completely hollowed out and only a little triangle at the bottom to gain entrance.  Dad helped me put a roof on it and it became my fort.  It was pretty dang sweet!  Especially when the neighbor gave me some windows for it.  Grandpa came over with his big chainsaw and showed me how to install them.

Years later after moving to Oregon we took a tour through the Tillamook logging museum.  There was an almost identical stump on display.  It had been used by an early trapper as a home with multiple floors, kitchen, wood stove...Super cool!  Tried to find a picture or record of that one and was unable.  Did find this one though https://www.flickr.com/photos/brettie/140379444/in/photostream/
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I like the size contrast.

May I suggest adding a vignette to the photo before printing?  :)

I just found another camera a few days ago. I was going to tease you if it was yours and show you the picture of the elk shed that I found today and say it was by your camera.
