How much .223 ammo is enough?
« on: November 26, 2008, 07:42:41 PM »
Ok, so hopefully all of you have already purchased your .223 home defenders by now. You have purchased an arm load of extra magazines for your AR or AK or Mini or whatever....

How much ammo is enough? Not that you could even find a great deal on any today, but how much .223 should I have saved up at home for "personal" use...  :dunno:

How many home intruders do you think you can kill before YOU are killed? Only reason I ask, hypothetically speaking, if you/we are ever attacked to an extreme extent where we are going to depend on a couple thousand rounds, don't expect to last too long. I hope people don't realistically think it is going to be anything like Red Dawn and militia's are going to form in the mountains. Personally, I'm comfy with my 12 gauge and .45 for those unexpected home intruders. Oh, I almost forgot about my 85 pound pit that someone would have to get around first. :chuckle: :chuckle: I have a buddy who was planning on buying some bulk .223 and changed his mind while at the Portland gun show the cheapest he found was 500 rounds for $250. Wasn't .223 around $200 for a thousand rounds before the panic set in? I'm only speaking on the "what if" and not speaking on "recreational use"

I would fall into the "never enough" category. If I find a good deal I buy it b/c I'll shoot it sooner or later.
A far as ammo prices they have been expensive for a long time due to the price of metal and availability due to the war. The recent panic mode has only raised it a little. I saw Federal 55gr BT-SP today for $400/1000. To high for me.

Gun shows and order it.  Dad has a ton of connections and gets all our ammo and mags (top of the line) for cheap!  Right now it will be more $ for all but dont wait because it will continue to go up and be harder to find.

I can think of better things to defend my home with than a rifle. I don't cherish the idea of someone or something other than a felon gettting hit.

I tend to agree with muley sniper.   No thanks, I will stick with a side by side 12 bore loaded with six shot.

Defending the home with a shotgun would also be fine IMO, but consider this; many law enforcement officers bring the assault rifle to the battle due to it's pinpoint accuracy, and...small caliber, hollowpoints basically fragment on impact and do not pose a threat to nearby citizens as much as a pistol round, slug or buckshot would. A rifle is exactly what you want to defend your home. Loads quick, multiple rounds available, less chance of injuring bystanders.

What is your process for vacuum packing ammo?  Any chance the process could set one off?
