Wow Idaho is really taking care of disabled veterans!

It's good to be one of the 40%ers or above crowd.  :chuckle:

Disabled Veterans ProgramsTuesday, May 20, 2014

Disabled Veterans Special Big Game Tag Program
The Disabled Veterans Special Big Game Tag Program allows a qualified organization to apply for a special big game hunt tag on behalf of a disabled veteran. A qualified organization is defined as a 501(c)(3) or 501 (c)(19) nonprofit organization, or a government agency, with a mission to afford opportunities, experiences and assistance to disabled veterans. The program is not limited to organizations in Idaho. Idaho Fish and Game makes five tags available each year for disabled veterans for any deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, black bear or mountain lion hunt. Tags may be requested for general or controlled hunts. An additional five tags may be available each year. Participants are exempt from licensing requirements. The program is a first-come, first-served, once in a lifetime opportunity. The application, at the link below, must be used to apply.
Application for a Disabled Veterans Special Big Game Hunt - PDF, 85 KB

Resident Disabled American Veterans
Resident disabled American veterans may be eligible for DAV reduced fees for licenses and tags. The DAV license, $5, allows the disabled veteran to purchase reduced fee Disabled American Veteran tags for deer $10.75, elk $16.50, bear $6.75, or turkey $10.75. They must submit a letter from the Veterans Affairs office verifying a service-connected disability rating of 40 percent or greater. Such documentation may bear any date prior to license application. Documentation for the resident DAV license will be required only for the initial application and will not be required for subsequent applications.

Nonresident Disabled Veterans - effective May 16 2014
Nonresident disabled American veterans with a disability rating of 40 percent or more by Veterans Affairs are eligible for nonresident DAV reduced fees for licenses and tags.

Individuals meeting the DAV requirements must submit a letter from the Veterans Affairs office verifying a service-connected disability rating of 40 percent or greater. Such documentation may bear any date prior to license application. Documentation for the nonresident DAV license will be required only for the initial application and will not be required for subsequent applications.

The nonresident DAV hunting with 3-day fishing license, $31.75, allows the nonresident disabled veteran to purchase reduced fee nonresident Disabled American Veteran tags for deer $23.75, elk $39.75, bear $23.75, or turkey $19.75.

Wow!! Infinity! For years I've kicked myself in the backside for not living in Idaho instead of Clarkston so I could have bought a life time license when I lived over there in the mid 80s. This is great News!!  Thanks for sharing!!

So does anybody know where to start in Idaho? I have looked at the harvest stats. But it is almost like throwing darts at a map and saying lets go there.

I called WA DAV yesterday (1-800-562-2308) & got my letter to verify my 40% today. I will fax a copy of the letter to IDFG Licensing tomorrow. (208)333-2148 fax. They told me once they update my profile I can go in & buy licenses/tags at the reduced rate & you only have to do this once not each year. I'll let you know how I do.

Thank You Idaho!!

I have been the last couple years. I can't say enough good about Idaho. The game department is very supportive of hunters. I know that seems odd.

Thanks for sharing this I will have to dig out my award letter, and get it over to Idaho F&G.  I have always wanted to do an elk hunt in Idaho, and have a couple friends who do regularly, this just makes it considerably more affordable.

I was going to forward this to a buddy but maybe someone could tell me if he would qualify.  He is a veteran and lost a leg just above the knee.   BUT..... the leg injury was in a farming accident after he got out.  Does the disability need to have happened during service?

Would seem to make the most sense if it did.....
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

Yes it would have to be service connected to have rating from the VA.
