Accurate Sidelock Shooting
« on: May 20, 2014, 05:44:07 PM »
In dire need to get on the range with my CVA Hawken .58cal 1:66 twist, I wanted to give the Mink Oil patches a try with a decent hunting load for roughly 170 yards tops. I did not get my elk tag so 200 yard shooting is out for this year. 170 is a little bit out of comfort range but its nice to know that if you need it and can make the shot, its available.

I Chronographed these loads as well, along with swabbing between each shot with Moose Milk, cut down with alcohol. Due to the added alcohol, the lube is no longer good for patches, but great for cleaning between shots.

Swabbed the barrel prior to loading it, Popped a cap to ensure flash channel was clear and proceeded to load.

Got set up and noticed my sights were horrible bright and fuzzy due to the sun at the south western part of the mountain and with it hitting me from the side, I decided to use Bubba's Masking tape sight covers, available for $39.95 + shipping and processing, But wait! Order now and you'll get a second set of Bubba's masking tape sight covers half price! Just pay separate shipping costs.

You can already see in this picture what a huge difference it makes.

With the sights fixed, I took shot #1 and noticed I was low, Moved my sight up, took my 3 shots and of course, On shot #4 ( the highest) the sun dipped, causing a shadow to fall across the black bulls eye which made it impossible to tell if I was 6 O clock on the bulls eye or 6 O clock on the shadow. I was on the shadow apparently!

Size reference,

Cleaned the bore, let it cool down for a good 10 minutes while I relaxed and enjoyed the cooler evening air, then Loaded up and took shot #5

Later on I will tap the sight to the left just a touch and go from there. I will be working at 150 yards next to figure out how many clicks up I have to go on my ramp to get her dead on at that range, then off to 170-175 yards.

Load used:

100gr Goex 2f

.020" Patches

.570" Hornady round balls

Mink Oil Patch Lube

What range was that?  You must have excellent vision.  My eyes coupled with heavy sights definately limit my range.
