First Hunt
« on: May 07, 2014, 07:32:06 AM »
So with the mentor question the other day it brought up a really cool memory.  What are your first hunting stories?  The first hunt that i remember and actually had me hooked, I was only two years old and somehow i remember this.
It was November or december of 1991 and at the time i lived in Brewster WA.  My grandpa and uncle had come into town for the weekend to hunt ducks with my dad.  My uncle brought me my first gun, a little plastic rifle that made cool sounds when i pulled the trigger.  I really wanted to go hunting the next morning with my dad and was really excited when he said yes but no crying it is going to be cold.  The next morning we were in the duck blind by 4 am.  At 6 am my dad had to change my diaper. :chuckle:  At 7 am the first set was locked up and coming in.  Waiting patiently i remember watching my dad had made a whole in the blind so i could see and "shoot".  Dad said take'em we all jumped up and started shooting.  5 ducks in the water, dogs are retrieving them.  My dad looked at me and said, "Good shooting son!  You got them all."  From that moment I was hooked.  I don't think my dad ever left me behind after that, no matter what trip it was.  All I wanted to do was be like my dad and hunt.  I look back and even though it was so long ago, I wish i could go back to that day.

That's pretty cool man. I've had some pretty good times hunting the Columbia around Brewster.

Great memory huntin'-add.  I can't tell you what got me hooked on hunting as my dad didn't hunt nor fish nor did anyone in my very large family.  Regardless, when I left home at 18 I became self-hooked.  I took my son out with me for the first time when he was five.  We drove up to a water way where we going to set up the deeks, unloaded the truck, and then I told my son to carry things down to the water edge while I went and hid the truck in a stand of trees ... about a 1/4 mile away.  I got back to where my son was and the whole pile of gear was still there so I asked him why?  He said the first thing he did was to take my brand new never fired Browning A-500 shotgun down leaned it up against some cattails.  The probelm ... when he made the second trip he couldn't find where he put the shotgun.  It took me 3 years to save for that gun and it was my pride and joy.  He looked so scared I couldn't help but laugh.  It took us an half an hour to find it.  He's 33 now and he will still tell you that story if you have a mind to listen.  It's the sort of memories we've built and we remain to this day best hunting buddies even though he lives in Oklahoma and I'm here in WA.  Next time I'll tell you about when he was seven and I had him with me scouting for deer up in the mountains and after 3 hours of scouting I told him he had to find the way back to camp.  It was great comedy.   :chuckle:

We moved out Into Amboy Wa when I was 10, I'd never had a back yard before, but had always wanted one, nor a front yard or been in the woods for that matter, but that all changed. We had moved next to 70 acres of unloggable timberland, the very next day after we had moved, I took my only knife, a little buck 110 folder and disappeared, I didn't kill anything, but it was so quiet, so peaceful, so beautiful...I never wanted to leave, for anything. Until I got hungry that is... But after that I couldn't stay out of the woods, every woods skill I know has been self taught, now that's what got me hooked but not my first hunt.

I lived in Amboy WA (foothills of st Helens) I was 10 and had finished my Hunters Ed, and dad had bought me a new Remington .270. I was so excited all I wanted to do was get out and try it. Well weeks went by and I kinda have up hope as I didn't expect to go any longer, but I'll never forget sittin in the back if that at when dad looked at me in the rear view mirror and said "you want to go on a beat hunt?" We'd been invited to go on the opening day of bear season  I lost my mind, I couldn't believe it, it was actually gonna happen!!! Two weeks later we left at 2 am, and I hadn't been able to sleep since bedtime. We never even saw a single bear but I had so much fun spending time with my dad that It didn't even matter. And those are my first memories.
