My spring Bear hunt has ended
« on: May 24, 2014, 02:10:52 PM »
I was able to find this guy. After fighting bad roads the last few weekends. This weekend I was able to get to where I wanted to hunt. I set out for a hike in an area I wanted to hunt. Seen a few bulls but no bears. So I hiked out and moved to another good vantage point. After about five minutes of being there I decided to glass back where I had just hiked out of. And there he was feeding where I had just been :yike: So I knew just where to go. An hour later I was 100 yards above him. He had moved less than 75 yards from where I last seen him. I watched him flipping rocks and feeding for a while. The wind was starting to swirl so the next time he turned broadside I dropped him in place.

Mt. View. I normally don't post units. But I just asked how the roads were in that unit a few days ago. So  I can't hide the area

And I normally wouldn't ask what unit, but I figured you had already posted about it in another thread. I just couldn't remember. Besides, these are permit hunts and they all can be good hunts if you put in the time. I don't think any of the east side permits are much better or worse than any other.

Congratulations.  This has been a bucket list hunt for me for a while (every year not selected...you know the routine).  Wow, out in the open field like that?  Well done.

I use a space blanket to keep the meat clean while I bone it out. It also helps cool the meat with the wind hitting it while I'm working on it, before I put it in the pack. It's like having a tarp, and it weighs about 2 ounces.

Beauty of a bear. Congrats

Pd I had six points this year. I was surprised when I drew. This unit was my third choice. When the spring hunts first came out odds were good. Now they are very popular. I think the odds would be a lot better if all that applied had seen the terrain of these units. It's big rough country. This bear took me about three hours to get up to the road. And he wasn't  near the bottom. Or it would have been a lot worse. I am very thankful for drawing and the chance to hunt some beautiful country.

Congrats on a nice bear go4! My bro in law and I had that tag last year and we had a blast. Lots of cool country. We didn't tag any bears but we were close a few times. Great job!

Slim, thanks! I enjoy seeing the bulls and bucks as much as the hunt. This year it was muddy and a bit scary at times to get around. In a few places if you went of the road your done :yike:This was the first good weekend as far as roads, since it started. But if guy has four wheelers you would have been fine most of the season.

Yeah we used quads where it was legal too, but there were a few spots that if you slid off the road you were in for a loooong ride. We spotted 8 bears in 3 days. We had a really cool bear at 400 yards but he wouldn't present the right angle. It had a blonde body, black legs and had a brown streak from nose to tail! We called him the punk rock bear. He was done if he had turned broadside but it wasn't meant to be. Still had a great time!
