PSE Surge: Opinions?
« on: May 25, 2014, 06:15:12 AM »
I'm looking at this for a first time bow purchase. Any thoughts on its appropriateness for elk and black bear?

Things I like are the performance they are getting with the single cam and at the price point. I also like the 40-70# draw weight range as someone just starting out.

I can't find too many reviews on this bow. Anyone shot it?

Thanks.

Thanks, that does look like a sweet bow, but I'm trying to stick to a single cam solution because I think I'll have a better hope of being able to maintain it myself until I learn more and have a better complement of tools.

If the single cam is what you want the Surge is a great bow for the money.  Bear probably has a better cam, but the PSE is a better all round bow.  Not much compares for under $400.  It would be a fine choice for anyone regardless as to whether they were a beginner or not.

With todays high quality strings there isn't much difference between keeping a hybrid tuned and a single cam.  And you get a whole heck of a lot with the Drive for the small price tag.  To find anything similar in performance and shootability you'd have to drop at least another $100 for the Mission or Hoyt.  I actually think the Drive is better than most of the $900 bows on the market.  A little heavy, but definitely the best buy of 2014 IMO!

Thanks for all the feedback, I went ahead and ordered a package setup around a Drive LT. On recommendation from a friend, I went with a QAD Ultra HDX rest and a Trophy Ridge sight. I feel like the rig will shoot better than me for a good long while, which is all I ask really. I'm pumped to give archery a go and excited to work on improving my skills.

It will shoot better than 95% of all archers...maybe more than that!  I think that should be an outstanding choice  And you will have money left over to pay all the butchering fees!
