Hevi shot choke tube is breaking?
« on: November 05, 2017, 10:24:22 PM »
I've shot about 300 rounds through this choke (all steel shot #2 and #3)  and I'm seeing these deep grooves/ scratches in the choke tube. The groves are right below the threads on the choke and there is a deeper groove on the very bottom of the choke but I think this groove may have been there from the factory because it's a black scratch and not a silver one. I would hate to have my gun blow up in my face because of a bad choke. The inside of the choke also seems to have grooves inside of it too. The only thing I can think of is that I'm over tightening my choke and recoil is causing these circular scratches around the entire choke. Any ideas?

I consider choke tubes as a consumable, just the price you pay per season for a bunch of fun!

I shoot full chokes in all my shotguns with steel shot for ducks and geese. I just replace them every year.

Looks like scratches in the finish from the barrel threads.  Is there any actual damage to the choke?

I'd contact Hevi-Shot and discuss it with them.   Now here's what I think happened (and I have not checked their web page on chokes).  I think there's a rib swaged into the choke to retard the wad.  I think that rib has been pushed out and when you screw the tube in its being scraped by the thread area.  That's what I think is scraping the finish off.

Hevi-Shot can figure this out for you.  The rest of us are "arm chair" engineers.

The nova and SBE take different chokes, so make sure you purchased the correct one.  It looks like contact from inside the barrel or threads from screwing in.  Did you coat the choke tube with lube prior to installing it as well?  If not greased, you may get contact as metal likes itself and requires some sort of grease, anti-seize, etc.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!
