50 BMG for the win
« on: May 27, 2014, 06:15:31 PM »
Doing a little load developing for a mile target we will  be shooting in next months match, I came up with this load right out of the gate.
Considering I've fired ~2500 rounds through this barrel, it's holding it's own for sure. Maximum fire power with lots of barrel life. No need for a specialized barrel burner.
225 grains of H 50BMG, CCI 35 primers, LC brass, 750 grain A Max.
Showing a lot of promise as I was able to connect @ 1245 yards right away.  Next will be to verify my drop @ 1760 and I'm GTG.
Out of my 24" Barrett they are going a sedate 2525fps which keeps them supersonic to about 2400 yards.
Bottom picture is a few 50BMGs loaded with the 750 A Max and a 338 Lapua for size comparison.

Looks like a good shooter.  A few thousand in rounds down range.  Fun, expensive toys.
Cut em!

Yowsers!!!  2500 rounds in a 50 BMG would require a lifetime supply of Tylenol for me.  The big 50 is thunderous and cool as hell to shoot but the muzzle blast is brutal and is a fast recipe for headaches with full range days.

Most of us are only joking when we say we need a truck load of powder but with the way those big dogs gobble up powder, 2500 rounds has to be somewhere in excess of 70+ pounds and when you say it, you mean it literally.

A buddy of mine swears by the 750gr A-Max at about 2600fps. He says there's no reason to burn the barrel out for minimal gains.

I keep telling myself I'm going to buy the next BMG that passes by at a decent price.

I had great luck in mine with almost the same load. 215 grains of H50, cci 35 and the 750 amax. Mine has the 36" barrel so it picks up a little more speed with the lighter loads.

Not for that. For posting on this thread, you bet!

My understanding is that the group was shot at closer range while doing load work, then the 1250 shot came later.

the 3 shot group is @ 100 yards.
The group is 1" C-C. The .510 holes make the group look smaller. :-)
