Arrow impact
« on: May 26, 2014, 08:23:15 PM »
I recently started shooting this year and puzzled about why my arrow is hitting left of the target at 40 yards.  I can use my top pin for 20 and 30 yards and it's right on, but the 40 yard point of impact is about 6 inches to the left and low.  I can deal with the low impact, but just confused about hitting to the left.  I changed from a tube style peep sight to a tubeless one this year. I never had that problem before and am chalking it up to just being out of practice and bad form right now.  Any other possibilities?

Are you grouping good at 40 yards?
It is what you meant it to be...

Maybe 5-6 inch groups right now. It's only like my 3rd shooting session this year.

Try not shooting at round dots.  Get out a carpenters level and place some tape on a vertical line from top of your target to the bottom.  This should help determine if your 30 vertical grouping is really dead center or not.  Don't worry about groups.  Just aim anywhere on the tape.

If you are dead center in the line/tape at 20 and 30 then you can pretty much figure the equipment is not to blame for the 40 yard setting being left.  Most common causes would be;
* Trying to watch your arrow.
* Punching trigger
* Low elbow in your draw arm
* not watching the sight bubble

At longer distance there could be some 3rd axis issues, but at 40 on level ground that should not be an issue.

My wife had similar issues going from our 40 mark to 50.  Seems there was a tree at 45 yards that was not vertical and she would tend to lean away from the shot shooting with the bow canted the same as the tree.  We moved the target forward ten yards so the 40 stake was actually the 50 and the problem went away.  It was a good visual lesson to help her understand the importance of watching the sight bubble.

I'm chalking it up to something other than my bow. I tried the tape idea and it seems to have showed it was something in my shooting form. I'm lined up good out to 60 yards. Now I have to raise it a little. Thanks Radsav.
