About 20 years ago we were deer hunting in AZ and my uncle sat on a rock outcropping and heard some soft mews. He realized he was sitting on top of a mountain lion den. He used his rifle to push the bushes aside and the lioness came barrelling out and almost knocked him on his a$$.  :yike: It ran around about 75 yards from the den and he was not able to get a clean shot. Glad it wasn't me, I would have died on the spot.

Oh he got plenty of treats, and I actually treated him to his favorite bacon and cheese! He doesn't get out often so I'm hoping that helped show him how appreciative I was!

They were after your dog.  Canines are very territorial, especially with pups in the den.  If it had been just you, you probably wouldn't have seen them but they were gonna make sure your dog left the area. Most likely the only reason the pair didn't kill your dog was because of your presence.

I had a friend a few years back that was trail riding with his horse and dog and they got too close to a den.  The pair of yotes followed them over a mile and it finally ended with a two on one rumble.  His dog ended up with over 150 puncture wounds.  Coyotes play for keeps!  Its life or death in the wild and coyotes kill for a living.  Pack heat and keep an eye on your puppy.  Glad it worked out well though.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton
