Muzzleloader elk bullet
« on: June 13, 2014, 05:32:24 PM »
Looking for some real world experience here.  Hunting for a bull this fall with my .50 cal T/C Black Diamond.  I've killed many bucks with it using a 330 grain Harvester sabot bullet and 100 gr 777.  Looking for recommendations for the elk load.   Considering just bumping up to 150 grains with the same bullet as long as the accuracy remains.  I've read some on the Nosler muzzleloader bullets as well as the TC Shockwaves.  Anyone out there with actual field experience with any of these on an elk??  Thanks.

If your load and bullet combo are working for you I would say stick with it. I've killed 2 elk with my ML. One was with a 300gr Barnes Red hot, the other was a 250gr Bloodline. Both with 110gr 777. No need to fix whats not broken.

I would not try to push a hard cast bullet that hard. 150 grains is a lot of powder and if you're wanting that kind of velocity go with something that's made for that kind of speed. I'd probably go with the Bloodlines if you can get them to shoot in your rifle. I would not use more than 120 grains of 777.

This is a 300gr Hornaday SST I believe 45cal with 50 cal sabots. This was removed from a 302lb cow elk shot in 2012 at about 50 yards. I shoot 90gr of 777 and magnum caps. It was almost a complete pass through it broke 3 ribs on the way in destroyed both lungs and broke 2 ribs on the other side before coming to rest in the hid. If I remember it retained all but 23 grains of weight.

I was pleased hope I can do it again because I got drawn for the same tag

Thanks for the info.  Just wondering what the issue is with higher velocity for the hard cast bullet.  Hadn't heard that before.

Glad to see the pics and report.  I just picked up a box of 300 gr Hornady SST's.  I hope I can get them to shoot good on paper...........looks like they should perform on game.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I have had good and bad luck with the hornady sst's.  I dropped a bull in it's tracks at 165 yards a few years ago with 110 grains of powder.  Then last year, I shot a cow at 40 yards and the bullet went clean through into a tree and didn't mushroom at all.  I dug it out of th tree just for fun and the tip was slightly rolled over but not much.  Luckily I hit the cow in both lungs and the heart so she didn't go far, but there was almost no blood trail.  I think I am going to try the barnes TMZ's this year.

What you are shooting sounds fine to me.  I shoot 275 bloodlines over 110 gr 777 3f, I have considered moving up to the 300gr.

i shoot the exact same set up, took the bull in my avatar with it.  Same gun T/C black diamond xr.  I found the bullet wandered more at 120 and above.

I've killed 3 bulls with a 220 grain round ball and 90 grains of fffg Goex. The furthest one went 40 yards and dropped dead the others went less than that. Your load is way beyond that.
