need some help please... guns acting funny for me today
« on: June 07, 2014, 09:02:53 PM »
ok so ive been messing with my remington 700 300 rum vls/sendero for a while now on loads i have a leupold vx3 with the custom turret on it. im loading 95gr of retumbo with a 200 gr accubond at 3.655 OAL and using fedral premium magnum match primers. ive been tearing the same holes at 100 yards pretty much just making it bigger, ive been shooting a very cosistant 5inch groups at  800 yards.  today i went up and shot the same load ive been shooting sence last october its been doing very good but for some reason today i shot 800 hitting way right so i kinda scratched my head and though wtf so i set up a 100 yard target boom boom boom dead on could cover them with a quarter sooo hummmm set up a 500 yard target bam bam bam  3 inch group then went back to the 800 yard target and 2 feet right again so i compensated for the 2 feet and boom in the orange it went. so  my question is what would cause my gun to shoot 2 feet to the right from 500 to 800 yards?

ive made that 800 yard shot alot with that load and was doing awsome but for some reason it was horrible today.

also forgot to mention there was a 3 mph left to right wind but at 3330 fps i wouldnt thing that would blow it off that much atleast it hasnt messed with me much in the past that was 3mph from were i was shooting and also read it at 3mph at the point of impact when i was putting the target up so it wasnt a faster wind down range.  could that 3mph could of caused it?

With that bullet and velocity a 3mph(90 degree) wind will put you off 10" or so at 800 and a 5mph wind will put you off around 17". Wind may have been 3mph or so at you, you may have had a stronger crosswind a little further out. If it grouped just fine and you made hits when compensating for the off target impacts and it grouped fine at 100 & 500 yards. Then everything points to the wind call, sounds as if the rifle set up is good to go.

I was running your numbers. 3330fps with the 200gr Accubond and a 7mph wind at 90 degree's will put you off 24" inches. Wind calls are critical at those distances.

dang so that is about right ya i was shooting through the chrony while i was shooting the target at 800 ( trying to kill 2 birds with one stone hahah)  and it was right at 3330 fps. wow i need to look into that alot more i didnt relize that the 3 mph wind would make that big of a diffrence. thank u very very much for bringing that to my attention. i dont know very many people that are into the long range shooting so im kinda learning as i go

Here is the ballistics program I use the most because it is always handy, I have the App on my IPhone and IPads. More often than not I have one or both with me in the field. I run the App "GeoNumbers" and several others to get my elevation. When figuring accurate on the spot shot solutions. Humidity and such is right on the weather App on my I phone. You can store your load and info along with the drop chart and wind drift charts in your "Favorites" or you can run the number for your shot right on the spot. If you have a iPhone for on the spot shot solutions, you can lay your phone on your barrel or target turret and lock in the degree of shot angle and the program will compensate for the plus or minus barrel angle. Very handy when shooting steep down or up hill. I use it all the time while shooting Rockchucks in steep open country here on the Eastside.

More often than not at 800 yards plus you have plety of time to work the numbers to put bullet where it needs to go. In a hunting situation.
