Vail tree farm

Thinking of taking my son to the vail tree farm for youth hunt   my question is do you need to have a permit to do scouting

You can't scout before the season. You only get two free days to hunt.

NOTE – As is our tradition, Youth Hunters will be allowed access to the Vail tree farm on the first weekend of the youth hunt without charge. No Permit is required for Youth Hunters & their adult companion on these 2 days only.

Would my son need to have applied for the youth hunt to get the free access or is the hunt during general season and could he still access the land and hunt the general without a permit?

The Skookumchuck youth permits (both buck and doe) begin the Saturday before the general modern firearm season.

Free access is for youth permit holders who were drawn for that special hunt. It is the weekend before the general modern deer opener. There is no general "youth" season in the Skookumchuck; only the general modern season.

I couldn't apply him for permits.  Hes doing his hunters ed this weekend.  Ill probably buy him a permit and have him hunt the general season with me.

As of the hotline update on April 11, you can enter non-work areas on foot or bike and do some summer scouting if it doesn't get closed for weather. 

If nothing else, it is a chance to get to know some of the area if you haven't been there before.

You get the permit for Vail and he gets to go with you as a family member.

You need to have been drawn for youth tag permit and can only access it Oct.4 and 5 without the special Weyerhauser permit that cost $200 and sold out in 20 minutes

They pay attention now and make sure the youth hunter has the youth hunt permit.  In years past ignorant parents took their kids in there a week early thinking it was just a youth free for all and the jack-hole at the gate didn't give a rip.

My son had that tag about 5 or 6 years ago and they only opened one gate into the area.  When we went in there was someone there checking to make sure we had the youth tag and when we left around noon that same guy was still there and also a game warden checking everyone going out.

Both my boys had that tag twice each, and we were always checked thoroughly before entering...

I'm bringing my boy for the modern season.  He's only got the buck tag though.  Next year the permit will probably increase and sell out even faster.  So not a consistent way to gain access.

My son had the tag last year, they checkus in and out. Was hot weather, my son finally dumped a spike at about 4pm, only one other deer was taken out that day according to tha gate keeper
