Drew tag for Nov 18 to 26 in the Margaret.   Anybody have any suggestions regarding this hunt/area.
This is what I call a target rich environment.

Tell everyone on your camp to start saving for the weyco permit.........

Then stop at the gas station in toutle and buy the st helens tree farm map. (you can also get some delicious fried chicken there) There is a road that heads north off the highway up towards some private houses. The first part of this road is private but you can access the upper part by going in through either of the gates east or west of that road and come in through the top. Should be an easy tag to fill so have fun with it!!!

I believe he is talking about the private access point being the 2500 line which is in fact in the margerate unit. Can't access that line from that entrance but his post shows where to look

These were the results from last year's Antlerless Hunts:

Modern- 62%
Archery- 13.5%
Muzz- 18.5%
Dis.- 20%
Total Overall = 38%

Margaret is not like it used to be, with elk around every corner. But you will likely need to actually HUNT if you want to be successful.

It may not be what it used to be as far as drive around and shoot one out the window, it's all thirty year old timber not clear cuts and reprod like the good old days. There are still a ton of elk in there you just have to get out and get after them.

I had the tag year before last and was on elk every day. But after the first day the Elk get wise will not stick around to get shot at. I also took a couple weekends to scout and a few days before the opener. So freebie? No, Heck of a good chance? Yes

I drew the archery antlerless tag, and the toutle tag a few years back.  Can't wait!

Be careful which road you access. Last year we Accessed a road that had a Yellow (former) Weyerhauser gate on it. On one side of the Gate was private property (The road from Spirit Lake Highway) on the other side Weyco land. Well, 0500 the gate was open. At 1700 the gate was locked. Called Weyco and they told us that we were on private land and the gate belonged to a private owner. Some other hunters led a pack of about 6 trucks out of there. All of us would have been stuck somewhere out there had some people with better knowledge not shown up. Just a tip!

I would probably just park along spirit lake hiway near cow creek and hike around. Or take the 1900 to the 1100, follow the 1100 hundred to the 2576 (I believe that the number), drop down the hill to the 2500, cross the bridge and your in a good area of the Margaret to smoke a cow. Good luck!

My wife has the same tag. Even though the herd numbers are down, there should be plenty of cows to go around.

Margaret and Toutle require a St Helens tree farm permit. It's $150, the Vail permit is $200.

well that wasnt what i wanted to hear. the girl friend and i drew toutle cow tags, but $300 seems like too much for us to hunt it.

Hunt the big block of state land then, in the north side of the unit, if you don't want to pay Weyerhaeuser. Plenty of area to hunt, it's just got a lot more timber and less clearcuts than the Weyerhaeuser.

I've never hunted the margaret, but I know that a little bit of scouting, and getting away from the roads will get you great results. There are plenty of elk, but they don't sit on the roads.

Good luck and hunt hard! Love seeing stories of big girls killed!

I should have done a little more research. In the other thread the article said it was going to be $150 for a family permit. My wife drew the muzzy cow tag. She's disabled but can get around a bit. So as I understand it now she will need a permit, I will need a separate one, and anyone going in to show us around will need one also. Is that correct? If so I feel bad for potentially burning her cow points. Does this also mean you need the permit to fish the S. Fork Toutle? I guess we'll scout the state land.

Tmike- you will only need one permit if she is registered as a disabled hunter with the WDFW and you have her companion hunter card. But yes, anybody else that goes along as a helper would need a pass.

Wouldn't they only need one permit period since they are married, regardless of the companion permit?  I would think that TMike could go in with her just by having the permit and the companion permit could be used for someone that went along to help her if he wasn't with her.

The companion card doesn't have my name on it so that would be a possibility. I need to check on that too.

So you could have another helper along if that person was in possession of your wife's designated hunter card or whatever it's called. But check with Weyerhaeuser on that first. But for sure, your wife, you, and your under 18 kids are all on one permit.

Weyerhaeuser has a process to issue a companion permit, you must contact the Longview office to get the paper work. It is their paper as they do not accept the hunting companion card issued with you license. I have already talked to them about the process. Seems pretty easy.

Got a response. Her permit allows family access and the hunter companion also if not me as long as he isn't hunting on his own tag. I can live with that.
