marengo-dayton cow tag
«

My 12 year old son drew the marengo-dayton cow tag. Just wondering if any one has any recomendations on land to hunt. After looking it over it looks like mostly private land.

Get the PSE access pass which is free. There is a bunch of property for this pass. Pick up at the KOA campground. Can do everything onine then pick it up there. Have seen elk on the property in the later months. Nov, Dec, Jan.

That is a tough tag man. There is public land to hunt by Maloney Mt, but there are lots of guys who hunt it as well. We just studied a map and found public land on the edges of the GMU boundaries to hunt, but we also started knocking on doors to hunt farmers land closest to the National Forest.

The season starts Oct 25th to Nov. 2nd. Thanks for the info. With all the private land I figured it will be tuff.

Just go talk to a lot of the farmers and ranchers, tell them your son has a cow tag. You might find the response better then you think but get out there as soon as you can.

In Marengo unit, you will have a harder time getting access to the private stuff closest to Patit rd, and FYI those farms aren't part of the PSE access. Good luck!

My family owns a ranch in 163. I can tell you specifically where to hunt and who to get permission from. This is a very difficult tag to fill, without permission to hunt.

Perhaps the toughest elk tag to fill in the Blues. Limited access and very few elk around that time of year except on the Forest Service ground. WDFW hands out a lot of cow tags, which looks good in the pamphlet, but they know this one is pretty much for show only.

Agreed...
I wrote letters to Olympia about it. I suggested to Scott R. to try and get them to, either open the tag up to the National Forest or take it out of the regs. That was 4 seasons ago. Waste of points!

Yes, WDFW needs to cut the number of tags way back on that hunt. Not fair to people using points for it. It'd be a different story if the hunt was in the middle of the period when elk are doing the crop damage. But they pretty much have moved to higher ground by the regular season and the vittles are long gone.

If they want to keep the permit, then they should move the hunt date to Dec, Jan, and Feb. Do the same thing they do for the Raymond damage control hunt. At least this way the hunter has a reasonable chance of getting an elk. The elk have herded back up and are wintering in Marengo by then. I suggest this because the game department claims it is a "damage control hunt" to satisfy the land owner complaints. If that is true; change the hunt dates to give the hunter a fair chance.

Thanks again for all the info. It will be a good experience for him regardless going and asking for permission in the off season. Since I wont have a rifle tag I am hoping some of the farmers will let him hunt.
