Quality Huckleberry Buck

My 14 year old son drew this permit. I have friends that have property south west of chewelah, and one of my best friends lives in chatteroy, that i will be staying with.

I see that there is a regular season in the unit pretty much at the same time.

What do you think the best time to have my boy up there?

And any ideas on the best area to get my boy on a masher buck. He is really excited.

There is a huge difference in a couple of days. Thanksgiving is a shooting gallery on ruttin bucks. Knock some horns together and wait about ten minutes. Plus you will basically have the whole unit to yourself. I was raised in chewelah and now live down in elk. Pm me and I'll give you a great place to start. I think it's awesome when kids get chances at good horns.

Pray for good(bad) weather.  I had the tag last year and ate it.  Moon/weather were terrible.  We hunted hard for four days and only saw a couple of small bucks.  I was hunting in the unit north of yours.  I would plan to hunt the last 4 days if I were you.  Can't be crappy 2 years in a row.

Looks like i wasn't paying attention to the permits. We could have just hunted this during late buck. And i used his quality points on an any buck tag.

He is excited so that is all i care about. Gotta hunt hard and find him a masher.

5 hour drives to shoot a whitetail will be an awesome time with my boy.

No, you didn't screw up.  This hunt is all about the last 4 days (after the general late season ends).  Most years, that's when the rut gets crazy. 
When I was a kid in the 80s once the general late season dipped into the "crazy time" for the last two days (weather, moon, rut, etc..).  It was nuts.  My dad killed a 154" buck that was ramming (not rubbing or scraping, actually ramming, like a bighorn sheep) his head against a pine tree the diameter of my forearm.  I saw a buck that was so swelled up that his eyes were almost swollen shut.

Looks like a nice long season. He even gets to hunt for several days between the end of the early general season and the beginning of the late general season. And best of all, he doesn't have to count points. In the general season you have to take the time to be sure a buck has 4 points on a side.

It is a quality tag that gives him a 45 day modern whitetail season.  Not to mention it is a 350 mile or so drive for him.  Shooting a year old buck would be a giant waste of that tag.

I disagree that it would be a waste of a tag.  It's all a matter of perspective.  If a kid decides to shoot a young buck on a quality tag then more power to them.  Whatever keeps them coming back for more.

There are plenty of youth antler less tags, etc out there.  If the kid is going 6 hours away with a quality tag in his pocket to a good unit I think holding out for a good buck will pay off.  A 3.5 year or older buck will get him more pumped than a dink he could get near home on a general tag.  I'm not just being a dick.  If the kid in question isn't having good luck his dad can message me and I would be happy to help.
