Brooms Are Back
« on: June 13, 2014, 09:26:26 AM »
Well, we had a house fire in April & lost everything but our dishes. We had to close our broom & candle shop for a while, but now we have our new shop set up. Feels so good to get back to work & have a better working place than before.  We're back!

Glad to see you are back at it. Those are so cool.
Did you lose all your tooling in the fire as well?

Cool stuff Smokepole!
Only 2 defining forces sacrificed themselves for you:
The American Soldier and Jesus Christ. One died for your freedom, the other for your soul.

My rock,
He trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.

Cool looking brooms, Have you ever thought about using an antler or piece of an antler on a broom?

I could see having a wisk broom with an antler handle being a nice addition to the camper ;)

I could also see my wife wanting one of the shaker brooms for our house, you might have found her next Birthday present for me!!
In God we trust, all others bring cash.

Do not say, Why were the old days better than these? For it is not wise to ask such questions.

Well it seems a little funny to buy a broom for a woman's birthday, but they really do dig them.  Most of our customers are women.  I have made some brooms with antlers, but not whisks.  That is a really good idea.  I'll need to try it!

We were lucky that the broom shop door was closed & the smoke didn't get in there too bad.  We emptied the shop when we got home at about midnight.  We were able to wash everything off o.k.  The rest of the house... the floor burned out in spots and everything was real hot in there.  Smoke damage was pretty bad.  Oh well... at least we can still make a living.

We recently bought two new antique tools from the 1800's.  This broom press was patented Sept. 10, 1887.  It's a little old, but still going strong.  They don't make them any more, so we feel lucky to have adopted it.  We will use it every day in our shop!

That is great history right there... I remember as a kid going to Silver Dollar City in South MO and watching broom making that was 40 yrs ago.
Way to keep up the history

Quadrafire, you may have seen a foot kicker broom winder then.  We also bought one of those.  It is originally from Missouri.  We are cleaning it up a bit, then we're gonna make brooms at fairs and antique tractor shows.  Not many foot powered kickers around any more, so we're real tickled to have it!
