Did you draw a tag?  Or are you spike hunting?   Ill be there for my cow permit but its a lot of wilderness and hiking.   We use horses because its hard work getting elk out of the back country.

Lot of hiking. Went up twin sisters trail and camped near lakes. Didn't get animals but by far one of the most memorable hunts being packed in, snow in September(early archery), beautiful country, and elk. One big thing we didn't know when we went to scout is that you need a northwest forest service pass to pack up there. I think it's $40 and you can get them at Rei and other stores. We noticed more sign near Indian creek trail and cougar mt. Best advice is be ready for some walking.

From my experience Bumping is a good unit that gets hit hard by hikers, hunters and maybe even Bigfoot. Lots of elk get killed and it will take a lot of boot leather and dedication to get a big bull. Lots of fellows go for spike or cow in there and this year there should be even a couple rifle guys going after some cows.

No, I am doing early archery over there. Just goin for good ol fashioned meat. I'm gonna be taking an overnighter over there to scout the area out. Sounds like a beautiful place, regardless of animals.

Sounds like a blast bowguy. Snow in September would be a surprise for sure. On another note, what are the rules for chopping wood for fires up there when there is snow? Is it frowned on or ok?

I don't know about the fire rules up there to be honest, I know some of the camps we hiked past had little ones trying to dry gear and get warm. We had bull tags that year and didn't spend a minute of daylight in camp. Sleep hunt eat sleep was the routine. If you don't have a small light tent best suggestion would be a tarp and fleece sleeping bag, pair if light early season pants and a pair if polar fleece, collapsible water container and purification drinking bottle and pump. So I take it not going to the colockum this year? How icy meat did you get from that spike last year.

Not a lot of roads for that unit. My buddy and I humped it in, ran into cows heard bulls bugeling.goes from semi open to thicker than a sob in some areas. Can be steep

Bowguy, I ended up getting around 150# off the spike. That was including the bones in the rears and fronts.  I was surprised how much less it weighed than I had thought. It was still a great tasting animal Lord willing we will get into some cows this year. It would be even better if my bro in law is able to score a harvest for his first year. Where you hunting this year?
