just wondering if anyone else has noticed !!!!
« on: June 15, 2014, 08:09:23 PM »
So last year modern eastern elk my father-in-law has a bull tag for a area we hunted hard and passed up a few bulls leading up to the day before opening spike season. the day before spike opens on that Friday afternoon we were on the ridge looking down at some elk trying to get a game plan on what way we should go in on them. There was 3 spikes off to our right and a 6x6 bull with about 10 cows at 11 o clock to us, it was pretty brushy and couldn't get a shot from were we were. but what i noticed was from where we were was that for the day before general elk season opens there sure was alot of people spooking the elk before they even knew it or thought about it these elk were running for a while ridge to valley to ridge and back down. there were camps set up right in prime elk hunting were i have been seeing elk for the last month. there were also people shooting non stop i probable heard maybe 200 shots that afternoon just one after another it sounded like world war three. i notice dirt bikes and quads doing 50+mph up and down the roads and people running chain saws cutting fire wood (witch is cool but the next day the same truck was parked there hunting not even 12 hours later hahaha) but what im getting at was some of these camps guys had elk less then 500 yards form them the day before but they decided to light off a 30 round mag into a stump and spooked them 3 ridges over. i just figured i would bring this to everyone attention because ive read it alot lately everyone talking about bull tags and stuff and people saying "awww ya it just wasn't that good last year". i know how everyone gets when they get to elk camp they wanna celebrate for a hopefully good season but just think alot of camps now days are right in prime hunting and u be a little more aware of it you might just kill that bull 500 yards out the front door of the wall tent hahaha

It seems to me that most elk hunters, at least with weapons that go "boom!", use elk hunting as an excuse to get away from their wives, drink, camp, shoot, and generally behave like juvenile delinquents.  It makes all that hard pre-season scouting seem sort of like a waste of time when Friday rolls around, huh?

Since they moved archery season to day after Labor Day, same thing happens every year prior to archery elk season.  All the knuckleheads out shooting up the countryside on Labor day weekend.

ya i mean i geuss we all do it to get out and have fun but damn it sucks when u scout for a bull tag for 3 months and a bunch of people decide to camp in every pull off and turn around and flying up and down roads and stuff it would be nice to consolidate all camps to one area so the elk don't get the pressure from all the other stuff that's not really hunting related. i would think the hunt would be way better if they were not all scared sh&tless before u can even hunt them.

dont get me wrong i like having fun at elk camp whiskey 7's around a hot fire is nice

Permit only would do a lot to solve those types of issues.

Really?

My bet is that permit hunters will also be hard pressed for time, and use the day before their hunt to load their camp with wood, shoot guns and also do just about anything else to spook elk that general season guys often do.

I'm thinking most people would take their elk hunts a little more seriously if they couldn't buy an OTC tag every year. In addition to that, there would be less people. Simple, less people, less chaos.

First year we hunted elk on the east side. No special draws but went anyhow. We chased a good size cow around our camp for probably 45 minutes after getting it set up. We don't shoot in camp and try to keep a low profile.
I have heard tale though, mostly from the old timers that if your camp is in the middle of the way it wants to go it will go right through it.
