101 deer numbers

Headed over to Curlew for Dad's birthday party.  1 of 3 or 4 trips I make before hunting season.  I assume deer numbers are at worst stable from a year ago with a some what of an avg. winter.  Dad used to do the scouting for us, but his age and health has cut this to nothing.  Unfortunately his hunting days are behind him.  We had some great years with some good deer.  The last few years (5) have been tag soup.  Dad used to be able to find the deer, now we more or less go out blindly and relay on past experiences, but that doesn't always work, at least not for the last 5 years.   :(

I have hunted 101 for the last two years and have eaten tag soup, however, I really had no clue as to what I was doing the first year. The second year I went it was to take my son on his first deer hunt. He tagged out and that was all I really wanted. Sure it would have been nice for me to get a deer, but in all reality, I didn't care.

My main goal for last year was to get my son his first doe and for me to scout for this year. I have succeeded in that goal and I will now have a great place to go this year if I make it over. The area I am to hunt I now know like the back of my hand. I have found the feeding areas, the beds and all the trails I will ever need to see.

I have seen lots of does and yearlings. Gotta be some bucks to breed them somewhere!  :dunno:

This year my goal again is to get my son to tag out if we do head over. If not, my back up plan is to get him to tag out on the wet side.  All my hunts for the following years to come are not really for me, but for my son and my other two boys if they ever decide to hunt.

After July I will have plenty of time to scout as my contract is up for my job. I will be hitting the wet side hard.
