normally it's the .30-06 with 150gr. hand loads.

WTF???!!!  :yike:

Jeez, Louise.  Just how big are these grouse, and do they glow in the dark?

These must be grouse out of a Roger Corman monster flick.

I mostly use a red label in 28ga with mod and full chokes.  With 3 different loads.  3/4oz, 7/8oz, or 1oz of 6 shot.  I start with the 3/4oz load to start the season and by the end of the season I am using 1oz.  That is unless I am hunting up high where I know I will be hunting just blue grouse.  Then I use a red label in 20ga with mod and full chokes, and I use 1oz or 1 1/8oz of 6 shot.

In order of most grouse killed (by me):
-.22 lr
-.410 pump
-.30-30 win (head shots while deer hunting)
-12 pump

And I've managed to loose 4 arrows trying with my bow.

most of the grouse i shoot are when i'm out looking for them, so my 20 gauge benelli montefeltro gets the vote.  a little over 5lbs, set up with an I/C choke and 6s or 7.5s in the magazine, deadly on those wood chickens.

i'd love to have a 28 gauge someday, but i definitely can't complain about my current setup :chuckle:
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Picked up a 20g barrel for the Encore that is perfect for Grouse.  Last few were sniped with a little CZ 452 .22 LR.

Just your everyday size grouse. Head shot and you just have to wait until they quit flopping around   No messed up meat, and keeping my shooting ability up  That's why I shoot deer and elk in the same spot.

I use a 16ga with Mod Imp. I would shoot more open chokes but something in my mind makes me shoot to sloppy when I have open chokes.

I use reloads.

First barrel 1 1/4 oz spreader load #9 shot
Second Barrel 1 oz load fast load 7 1/2 shot.

Grouse are a hard bird to hit, not a hard bird to kill. Is what I was told and it seems to be true. So I try and give myself every advantage in my loads to bring them down.

Just going to be getting back to grouse this year, been a long long time. My favorite gun from the past was a Browning Double auto in 12ga w/26" skeet barrel. 7 1/2 shot. This year I'll be using my 28ga AyA using 7 1/2 shot. At one time I had a Rem 870 special Field in 20ga that was very good. My son has it now.

20ga. with #4's or 6's.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.
