Bear cape STINKS, BAAAAD!
« on: June 28, 2014, 01:04:20 PM »
I need some trick to make my bear cape, well, bearable. It's a few years old. It came from the east side, opening morning. Problem is we were there for a 4 day hunt. Temps hit the low 100's during the day. I had it in a cooler and did everything I could to keep it cool, we were just in tents. I made the 30 mile (one way) drive to the nearest gas station every day for ice. It still turned on me. I went ahead and tanned it anyway, some of the tan in a bottle you get from any taxidermy supply store (I know just enough about taxidermy to be dangerous). I hoped that might kill the smell, no go. It is REALLY ripe, rotten smelling. Amazingly enough it's otherwise fine, absolutely no hair loss or slipage at all. It's a cool cape, a cinnamon so I don't want to trash it. It's in the garage now and can no way come into the house the way it is. How the heck can I get rid of the smell without harming the cape. I thought about giving it a bath like you would a dog after a skunk run in. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Send it in for commercial tan, essentially re-tan it.

Soak it in cider.

Just kidding. Actually you might try soaking in hot water and dawn. Should help.

Did you split turn and salt the hide?

Did you degrease the hide?  How?

What Tan did you use?
