3rd season....ya talked me into it
« on: June 16, 2014, 10:49:58 PM »
What began as a desire to try bow hunting before my shoulder was completely shot has become an obsession.

Although the shoulder continues to deteriorate, I'm going to try it again this year.  I had a couple of questionable shots last year but just couldn't get what I wanted.

I'm by far not the best shot with the bow but with help and encouragement from others on this forum, I'm ready to try it again for my third season.

Unfortunately I think this may be my last swing at it due to the pain of pulling back the string.  Practice has become more difficult and I wont try it again if I can't be confident that I can make a good shot.

Thanks for all the help, I hope to be able to show off some pics after the season gets under way.

Good luck t6.
I shoot a 45# bow with 80% let off.  The arrows go right through the deer.
I shot 70# for years and have decreased my bow poundage as my body has broken down over the years. I have an arthritic condition too that makes it hurt to shoot the bow. I love it too much to quit.
I also try to shoot at least 6 arrows a day to keep my form right. You really don't need a full blown range to have a place to shoot. I have shot in my garage at 20 ft when I didn't have another option.
Hope you get one!

Im below #60 now, not sure what the let off is.  Its not so much the pull as it is the let down if I dont let the arrow fly.

I have a deep tear in the right shoulder that I've been advised not to attempt a repair.  The orthopedic surgeon said he was sure that attempting to repair would leave me with less mobility due to more internal scar tissue than what I have now.  The increasing arthritis doesn't help either.

I keep working it out and try to fire a few arrows every week.  I have plenty of places to shoot and if I'm lazy, I can even shoot in my shop.  Its 40x60.  I just have to lift the cars on the racks to have a clear shot all the way across.

Im looking forward to hunting some additional private property this year since Weyco has gone to the permit system in my area.  I refuse to give them a dime even though my family has property that backs up to Weyco.  its not like they have been good neighbors.

Good luck to everyone and again.......Thanks for the help and advice since I took up the bow.

As expensive as the good X-bows are, I think I'll have to pass.  I could buy a couple good muzzle loaders for that price.   Besides, I have 12 points for the deer hunts so if I hunt WA next year (and I doubt I will unless some major changes are made)  I'll put in for some east side muzzy hunts.

It's frustrating when you begin seeing the writing on the wall with age and having to put the bow down for good.  I'm hoping you can score a nice animal before that happens.  Good luck this season. :hello:
