My son got his bear back today!
« on: June 24, 2014, 01:05:24 PM »
We've been enjoying the bratwurst & pepperoni snack sticks for months, but he just got the hide & skull back from his Sept 2013 Washington bear. Pretty cool. The hide came out very nice! Typical Washington black bear, a chocololate brown with some red in it. We'd guess around 300 pounds or a bit more, live weight.

Really nice! Who did you have tan it? Did the skin get broken down pretty soft? What are your plans for it? I also just had the hide tanned, if it will be soft enough for use as a throw.

He took the hide to a local taxidermist here in Wenatchee. I don't know which tannery the taxidermist sent it too. The hide came out kind of medium soft, if that makes any sense. It's a little stiffer than I'd want for a throw. The skull is nicely bleached out.

I don't know what my son is going to do with the hide eventually. He's got it rolled up in his closet for now. Already has another one, about the same size, on the wall as a rug. Mama said we have enough bear skins and skulls around the house. Young John and I disagree. Politely of course, she is Mama!

Thanks for the help Shane!

Regards, Guy
